With an event coming up Saturday, I had to prepare the new crane.
Instead of a tanker load, this year participants will need to pick up a set of containers.

Yes there is an electro magnet in the center of the lift.
I used copper plated board to create the two center winch dividers and then
created a couple of springs to contact the plates as the winch rotates.
The center wire reel was a little problematic in that it loads up quicker and
will go slack at the bottom of the lift, and tighten quicker as it reaches the top.

It should prove plenty of fun, or the source of much hilarity at this weekend regatta.

I have the same problem!
if I want a slow motion I have no torque
and if I want the weight come down slowly it takes weight
if I weight the hook does not go back, not enough torque!
it was necessary to order several pulleys, there are not many pulleys on the real ship.

I used a continuous rotation servo, and mounted that onto an perspex dowel.
I did nothing fancy due to the short time to have it ready. 
No one was procastinating this project...

The vertical perspex dowel was some scrap that I used as an insulator to mount
the bras contact bars for the copper plated(circuit board) discs.

• could you please confirm detail [Brand & Model] of the continuous rotation servo
• is there any current limiting device?
• what happens if the cable or chain is wound past it's stop?......does the cable snap?

I was originally going to make the crane robotic, but it would have required programming
at the pond to account for water and bank levels. In that mode, it would have had a
switch under one of the cables that would lift, if the cables went slack, and stop the descent.
And one switch at the top to contact the spreader if it rose to it's limit. The same would have
been possible with the gantry carriage.

However, making it ready for the weekend has left such limits to the operators better judgement.

I built this sheerleg crane for competition in 2010.

Two tug boat skippers were required to maneuver the crane so the "transformer" could be
landed on the offshore tower. The crane was limited to the lift lines. So the position of the
crane, and "transformer" box(2kg) relied soley on the tug skippers skills, and their commands
to raise or lower the load.

(This event was designed based on a similar crane at
the Belgium Model boat club, Modelbouwvreiden Hofstade.)


Mailline Vaargrouep in the Netherlands has since built the Dutch heavy lift as a club project.
