Circlip suggested that this photo of a disassembled drive might be
useful to those needing to see some of the workings.

Brilliantly simple piece of engineering.
Damn I bet that took some time to work out and reduce to that simple.
Thanks Umi, Circlip and Neil.

that certainly looks an interesting bit of kit Bob.............just depends on the output shaft diameter, as to whether the sprocket on the motor supplied would fit onto it. cheers, neil.
5mm. There's a fully-dimensioned drawing on MFA's website.

Thanks Umi, much appreciated.

And yes, Bauer could have modified it quite easily.

to big therefore for to allow a drill out of the centre of the existing sprocket on the motor supplied.....they are about 3mm dia with very little metal left on the outside to drill.

So fit a reducer on one end.
It only drives the belt and if mounted as a complete unit with the motor could incorporate an adjustment.

I'll bare it in mind Bob.................just hoping that I can get hold of the belts I need first.....would save a whole heap of trouble..........but been busy today on other matters so haven't done much today at all, modelling wise.

Been dabbling tonight with the main superstructure.............I constructed the sides and front plus pinned and glued the deck in place so that the sides of the superstructure faced up to the existing sides of the hull. I then layered masking tape to all the areas where filler would touch up to and filled in.........now the superstructure needs sanding down to take shape to a finished line.

It's looking a little better now that it has been trimmed down, sanded and final small amounts of filler have been added...........soon I'll be able to clad it with card to add detail of windows etc ready for moulding in grp.......it now also fits to the existing bulwarks which will make it easier to join to the hull without much of a problem.

it's also nice to get out some good old fashioned tools like a chisel and mallet to trim some timber down to level.

Hullo Neil.....that mallet is certainly not of common design  :o........in the dim dark past I can visualize an upholstery mallet being of similar bottle shaped construction...... :embarrassed:

Any ideas on its origin?.............Derek

it was given to me many years ago by an old wood carver/sculpture.....so I presume it had origins in that sphere, matey.........it's a very (dare I use the now common phrase which half the users don't have a clue as to what it means) Tactile implement and far better and nicer to use than a normal mallet.

It is also far easier to use than the 'conventional' mallet, as no matter how you pick it up it is ready for use :-)) :-))

Ä little copied text......"Summary:Mallet used by Eva Schubert, circa 1996, to carve and sculpt wood in her studio in Nunawading. This mallet was a favourite tool of Eva's in her wood sculpting work as is evidenced by the amount of wear on the tool. She used it to chisel away wood in the carving process"

Description: Wooden mallet with turned handle and cylindrical head. Head worn with use to an inward curve. Head worn away quite significantly through use Mallet is of a dark timber, darken and polished handle from use. No manufacture labels or marks'

well, finally tracked down those elusive longer belts to re position the motors for the Voith Schnieder units, via a US and European lead, and the company that is supplying them is http://www.brammer.co.uk/
the can supply me with belts 430mm (longer by 142 mm) immediately which I have now ordered .....have ordered one for you Andrew if you want it, (if not will keep it as a spare)

they also do longer lengths but have a 6 - 8 week wait..................just wanted to get the job rolling.
so all is well gives me an extra 3" length so I can re position the motor well away from the unit.

Hi Neil

Well done on tracking down the belts! A bit of detective work by the sound of it! Thanks for ordering a second one too. :-))

Just having a quick look at the build before heading off on my travels. Spent the morning packing the camera kit for flight, not a favourite job.

You're making great progress, I'll keep looking in while I'm away, Wi-Fi depending....... <*<

Regards

the main superstructure has now been filled and sanded to my satisfaction and have started building up the upper wheelhouse ready for moulding. the top part of it which has been added since the other photos were taken is purely the wind break on the top of the wheel house, but I thought it easier to make this as one with the grp mould and then just add a top deck of ply, than to get a thin plastic( or Ply) wind break made to contour to all the curves and shapes.

this will all be sanded, filled, sanded again and then clad in card to pick out the windows and door ways before moulding.

Hi From Serbia!

Just looking in quickly at the end of a very long day. Looking really good Neil. Unmistakeable profile of Jupiter with the wheelhouse mounted. Brilliant! :-))

Havn't had much chance to eat today so off for some 'nosebag' now!  {-)
 Will be watching progress.

cheers Andrew..........I think this was the best way of doing the superstructures o that it would be an easy build.

have a great trip in Serbia. Neil.

marked out the positions for the windows and doors for the superstructure..the relief positions of these will now be glued on in card before sanding sealer is added and then waxed up and moulded in grp. neil.
