BLIMEY, 2015 ALREADY.............. and only the basics done on this old girl...................must get a stonk on if I'm going to get the thing finished for this summer.............

been putting this job off for quite some time as it always ends in sore fingers and monotonous cutting and sanding down.............the Bulwark support stays..............don't know yet how many this vessel takes but I have cut just over 110 of them to make sure.

the height was measured and a strip of 1.5 plasticard cut to that height. then the stays were marked out, and a score line was made for each............56 per strip.
broken off in pairs, the inner water way was cut from them and then these in turn were broken apart.
Finally all were sanded flat.

Tomorrow I will glue the outer flange on to the edge that protrudes from the stay once it has been glued to the bulwark.thank goodness that job Is done!!!

added the outer flange last night to all 110 of them that I cut, now onto the cruciform bollards.making four of those so I can mould all eight in two castings.....

then onto the Colborne fairleads and the warping fairleads at the stern.....am going to leave the drilling of these till tomorrow.

the photos below show the beginnings of the cruciform bollards.

the base's cut out with the upright bollards ( made from old knitting needles) marked and scored using a small pad saw and my trusty V block. The use of the needle file is to mark centre for drilling for the horizontal bars.

then the horizontal bars cut to length from plaststruct, and then the end cappings for the bars cut from different diameters of plaststruct.
tomorrow after drilling they will be glued together using cyano and then put into a mould for casting.

never buy anything if I can make it, Tim...I'm a scrooge like that, lol

also........don't feel I've built it if I buy parts, unless of course it's a full kit, which I enjoy building...........someone else has done the hard work then, lol

tonight, got down to making the masters for the goose neck vents that adorn the bulwark sides....so much easier to make them from plastic when cold moulding RTV rubber rather than masters in brass......and very much quicker..............and I knew those old cocktail swizzle sticks would come in one day............only took 15 years to find a use, {-) {-)

the rounded goosenecks were heated over a candle before bending.

made the warping fairleads and the main warping capstans yesterday but because of talktalk's lousy service couldn't post till tonight......I do like a little turning in brass......gives me great satisfaction.
someone might notice that the third one has a different shaped bollard on it...a rounded top......this is intentional as it is/was a powered bollard,

the capstan will be cast in resin in two parts.

Hi Neil

Brilliant work as always..... :-))

Great to see these details coming together and seeing the process thanks to your careful documenting.

I'm still struggling with next to no voice..... {:-{
The family are loving it!  {-)

I'll be in touch once I find my vocal chords again.

Kind regards

Hi Neil, Happy New Year & all that Jazz.i Despite the fact that I have been quiet I have followed your thread & it is setting a new standard. I admire your work & your work ethic too. A lathe is a helpful tool & nice to see you using it.  (I can see you found it under the pile that was on top of it.)  As you already know I went all out after waiting & saving for years & got both a Lathe & a Mill, unfortunately they now sit idle most of the time(I bought all the tools for both machines as well) I try to use them when I feel a bit better but I don't have the patience now & standing is very hard after an hour or two.The way you use everything at your disposal amazes me all the time, you are one very inventive man & a credit to our forum & our hobby. Thank you. Some day soon you should come & visit I can guarantee you will go home heavier than when you arrived. Good luck to you and your daughters in the new year & many more years to come, just keep the BOAT buildings coming, Cheers Mate, Mick ( in Canada )

thanks for those lovely words Mick and all the best to you and your good lady too......

was only talking to the girls yesterday about your invites to Canada, and they said that they would actually like to go sometime.........so I told them to get saving their pocket money and once I have paid off the credit card, which is jaw busting at the mo, we would like to take you up on your offer...........my younger daughter, Rachel went to the pics last night because the rest of the family were going to the pub to see her older brother off as he goes to Canada in a few days for a couple of years or more, and it  inflamed their fancy to travel, and especially to Canada...........so you might see us knocking at your door....especially if I can sell my lifeboats, lol

take care my friend and have a good year...get doing some of those speedline models...could be new collectables soon, lol

there are more vents on this ship than in Sherlock Holmes's Cromby...a lot of different varieties........three more including the main engine room extractor vent ( made in four parts, of which two were vent supports for my Watson lifeboats with modifications to fit the trunk of the main vent).....plus another Hose/filler connection.
