I saw a end of a venerable  British ITV comedy the other day,   'Bless this House', with Sid James & Diana Coupland....

Sid says to his son:
" Here's a pound, take him to the pictures. And don't forget the change.'

... 1 ????? Was the Odeon ever that cheap... for Two?!

The local fleepit where I lived was, I seem to remember, 1 shilling and 6 old pence for a half price child (7.5p)

Google reckons 1 in 1971 (TV series) was worth about 15 in todays value, so I reckon it would have been quite possible as there was probably not the rip-off priced food available.

Don't lose sight of the fact that that pound was to cover the price of TWO seats (Sid's son and whoever 'him' was) and, yes, there would still be change (about 6 shillings, or 30p). This is quite fascinating https://www.terramedia.co.uk/reference/statistics/cinema/cinema_ticket_prices_1.htm

My cultural upbringing in the '50's was the New Ritz opposite the Central Pier of a Saturday evening.  Continuous showing cartoons, get in early with your 1/6d and stay until closing.
Anybody remember "Orange Maid" lollys at the interval?  A tanner for the flush.  Probably loaded with what would now be illegal additives, but they were very orange.

Describe your favourite Film as boring as possible, we'll try to guess the Title!

E.g:  Spaceship crew stops to collect eggs. The new pet ruins dinner and proves to be poorly socialized.

Whiny kid learns hokey old religion and saves the galaxy.

A homeless teenage draws a nude of spoiled rich woman but drowns in the end.

A TV reporter wake up and it's the same day as yesterday.

I've not seen the whole movie but I've watched lots of chunks - and it has that standard annoying feature of all American action films - everything happens at just arms length -  the ships and the subs can almost touch each other during the action.    No standing off a few thousand yards and firing, it's all close up - and yes, the turning circle of the destroyer is impressive!.         I guess a 5-minute torpedo run would sort of kill the intensity, but it's just like Godzilla, where Apache helicopters are in so close for no reason that the monster can swat them.

I also don't like the cgi - there's something really fake about it - almost like an oil painting - can't quite put my finger on it - I guess the whole film is a cgi technology demonstrator - just like the Polar Express.

From the adverts for the film Greyhound, it has all the hallmarks of being in the same genre as pearl harbour and midway, completely improbable charateristics of the vehicles (planes etc) and explosions that are fireballs and not masses of smoke as in actual life

Hi Plastic, when I watched B.O. midway I felt the same.  I think that what is wrong is that there are distance shots in which there is too much detail, there are some things you do not see from a distance.
Another thing that makes me smile is when the look-out calls down to the bridge and points out something that must have been in view for at least 5 minutes.
I shall look out for Greyhound but might wait a while before going back to the cinema.
Regards
Roy
