Rats missed that.

I hope its the full German version with English Subtitles as the English version kind of looses the effect for me..

And this to me was a great song realeased in 1992 ..Some may not like the music but the video put together is pretty cool.

I always have a tear in my eye when the boat starts to rise from it's certain grave and the chief cry with joy as he calls out the depth readings. Great stuff!  :-))

    Yawn.....

Curses! Fell asleep just before 'La Spietza' luckily I recorded it. Love the engine room scenes when the boat is going full ahead, all the rockers going like crazy and Johann The Phantom is opening the test cocks sending tongues of flame out, great stuff!

I wonder if any of the Navy (merchant or Royal) type Mayhemers have been in a disaster situation approaching that of Das Boot?

A good friend of mine was torpedoed by one - he made notes in later life and a family friend novelised them.  His name was Brian Clarke, the author was Sara Allerton, and the book is called "Making Shore".  Worth a read.

I shared an office with a guy who was sunk in HMS Seraph. He was taken prisoner and served out the rest of the war in a camp. When Das Boot was first shown he did say it was the most realistic submarine film ever made, although it still cannot recreate true conditions, as you don't feel the awful atmosphere and smells, etc.

If you go to http://www.uboat.net/ you will see photos of the DAS Boot set and museum.

Thank goodness for Freeview Plus! I watched it years ago on TV and can't wait to watch it again when I'm off in a few weeks time. Well worth the effort of sitting through a mammoth session. The music fits the theme so well.

The description given to me of smells on those old boats were a combination of BO, stale cooking, diesel and poo. Nice! Prefer to stick to the miniature versions.

Hi, I have the original series somewhere, all 3 hours plus, so long that they had a break half way through when premiered. I was disappointed with the directors cut. How can you get a quart into a pint pot. The original showed the boredom then the sheer
knicker wetting when the action started. I too can still hear the theme tune,  Nemesis

In an earlier post in this thread I mentioned my office colleague was sunk on HMS Seraph, this was an error my mind was elsewhere, he was sunk on HMS Sahib. Aplogies for the error.

Me too!

I loved the way they made the actors look so young and fresh faced at the beginning of the film and by the end they were old worn out men especially Johann Johann 'The Phantom' engine room mechanic... strangely enough, Werner, the War Correspondent ... doesn't!

Also interesting, the Nazi 1st Lieutenant, doesn't turn out to be the bad guy!

Great lines from the film:

"I can't navigate on bananas!"

"Let it be Henrick, we can hear it....... Well then? Come on!"

"ALL leaks stopped sir."

"Quite a clever trick. But the trick has to work."

By the way, a prerequisite of membership of Mayhem is watching Bas Boot at least 4 times!  http://youtu.be/1j3ug4Nflfs
