I just finished watching Tucker & Dale vs Evil, a brilliant take on the american hillbilly/slasher movies, plus its got Alan Tudyk in it so its got to be good ( I still miss Firefly)

I don't know about favourites, but movies not already mentioned that are most worthy:

The 5th Element
The Dish (note that this is an Aussie movie and a Kiwi thinks it's good!)
National Treasure
Gone in 60 Seconds (although the end is a bit naff - haven't seen the original BTW...)

I'm pleased that The Damn Busters and Torah! Torah! Torah! have been mentioned - I've only ever seen them on TV...

My favourite quote is... "ALAAAAAARM!" because you know something exciting is going to happen ;-)

I have managed to watch all but the last 40 minutes so far. It's a shame that I know how it ends, but that won't stop me watching it all - eventually :-)

I have seen the series in German with English subtitles, Brilliant!!
I have seen the Film in English, not quite the same atmosphere.
I have read the book, and to be honest, really boring !!
BTW I live in Austria, but am English.

Its based on the book U-333 by Lothar Gunther-Blucheim , a true story of a captain in the Kreigsmarine ( some of the photos make you go cold showing the damage ) , some very good photos in it for people building a Type VIIc/41 as well

Found one of my all time favourite films on youTube, 12 Angry Men:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0NlNOI5LG0&feature=colike

Must be one of the best bits script writing and characterisation of all time.

Fully agree there Martin, I allways make a point of watching it every time it comes on the telly. Currently watching the African queen over and over as research for my next project. :-)) :-)) :-))

Aah, Humphery Bogart.  Lost count of how many times I have watched Casablanca.  However the movie I have watched far more times than any other is Zulu.  It was so brilliant you can forgive the historical innaccuracies.

Undoubtedly, still, its good to watch for catching detail of the boat. For the purposes of filming, she was propelled through the water by a small diesel engine, so that the shooting schedule wasn't interrupted whims of the boiler.

There are odd bits of film that stick in the mind -
Marty Feldman as Igor in Young Frankenstein, with his mobile hump
Gene Wilder in Blazing Saddles explaining about the wrong hand shake
Daffy Duck being better than Errol Flynn at being Errol Flynn playing Robin Hood "Thith ithn't a quarter thtaff - itth a buck and a quarter quarter thtaff".  And much good it did him.
Errol and Razzle Bathbun having their iconic sword fight - i don't know if it was original, but the lighting format has been repeated so often......
The signs in the "proper" Batman movie.  And who is going to do Penguins submarine, the one with the flipper drive?  And the bat-boat.
Burt Lancaster in the Scalphunters declaring that his whiskey was "good and vile"
William Shatner in Airplane 2 hissing at the doors - I still have trouble resisting the urge every time I approach a self opening door.
Kato hurtling out of the fridge.

I enjoyed reading the Cineverse Cycle by Craig Shaw for all of its references to '50's B movies' conventions, and George McDonald Fraser's The Pyrates for its references and reminders of those pre-TV times spent in the local fleapit getting my grounding in culture.  Add Terry Pratchetts "Moving Pictures" with the memorable quote from the epic "Blown Away" - "I really don't care".

Tough to narrow down to five, and even to pick five of one genre, but I'll confine my five to WWII war movies:

  • Das Boot (in German)
  • Bridge on the River Kwai
  • The Dirty Dozen
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • Hell in the Pacific

Ummm... top 10 WWII movies...

In no particular order...

The Battle of Britain - Cheesy but oh, those Heinkels!
Ice Cold in Alex - Upper lips were never stiffer.
Kelly's Heroes - A laugh a minute.
The Bridge at Remagen - Sunday afternoon, slippers, tea and a scone. perfect.
The Dirty Dozen - Barking mad, the lot of them.
Das Boot - Chilling and atmospheric.
Saving Private Ryan - I'd watch it again and again just for the music.
633 Squadron - Same as above.
The Longest Day - The longest film.

One of my favorite WW2 movies is actually quite a recent release

Enemy at the gates
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0215750/

But kelly's heroes and Firty dozen are well worth watching

No one has mentioned Where eagles dare or the guns of navarone

OK.  Opening shots from Where Eagles Dare, first watched by me from the front row of the upper shelf at the cinema.  Proper big screen involvement.
Guns, good movie, but lacks Clint with his mandatory stick of dynamite.  Did carry the good side story about the film crew actually blowing up the Greek Navy's patrol boat, rather than just looking like they blew it up.

I ran across this today (19th) so the link will probably need a bit of navigating to to get the right date.  http://news.yahoo.com/comics/non-sequitur-slideshow/   Just seems to fit the current state of the movie industry.
