Did anyone ever watch the film 'Sea Wolves" ? The film based on the book  made in 1980, with actors David Niven, Gregory Peck , Trevor Howard and Roger Moore. The film ostensively about a bunch of  retired cavalry officers who in Calcutta decided to get involved in WW11 and sailed an old barge to Goa , sank 3 german freighters who were transmitting British ship movements to U boats so they could torpedo them. Fantastic story , even more fantastic is that it was fact not fiction , based on The James Lessor narrative of the event  "The Last Charge of the Calcutta Light Horse "

You must be joking (1965) -
https://youtu.be/NrbXqPJWgcw

Four British soldiers and a United States Air Force Lieutenant Morton have their initiative tested in a scavenger hunt, set for them by a British Army psychologist Terry-Thomas. They are instructed to obtain six symbols of the British way of life. The reward for the winner is to be fast-tracked for promotion and a ten-day, all-expenses-paid trip around the world for two. Among the feats to be accomplished within 48 hours are escaping from a maze, retrieving a rare rose and the mascot from a Rolls-Royce motorcar, and procurement of a lock of hair and an autograph from a popular French female singer.  Because of complaints in the past, if any of them get into trouble, the authorities will deny everything.

Terrible acting, cringeworthy script, lazy direction ...... I still manage to watch it all the way though!
A few giggles and Lots of cameos from well known British 'celebrities' of the time! 5-10

Dunkirk
« Reply #128 on: July 21, 2017, 09:23:23 pm »

Just had a chance to see the new film on the Dunkirk evacuation , it is simply superb  . Any film with a theme such as Dunkirk  was always going to be a hard one to do justice to . This did more it conveyed  the shear terror and  even the  high  emotion  of just one segment of the evacuation principally around the mole  but including the horror of  ships being bombed and torpedoed . It shifted  from land to sea and air  in an odd sort of docu-drama sense  but the director pulled it off magnificently . Only one small critique  the naval ships consisted of  a French destroyer 1950 vintage  supposedly  an  RN destroyer ,  a Ton class minesweeper plus several other more modern patrol vessels.  Yet it was difficult to differentiate between ,  the cgi   and  the live footage all  brilliantly done . Yet it was the little ships that really did it for me  and the ending sequence ,  sorry no clues  you will have to see the film for yourself for that  .I have to admit there were  sequences that brought  tears to my eyes. <:(

As with me.

Here's quite an evocative film from the British Film Council in 1943 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnTtJwgP0jM

Well what can I say, Went to the pictures last night to see Dunkirk, what a film very powerful and well done, it's something the younger generation should see.
Even had the Endeavour from Leigh -on-Sea in the film as well.
If you are thinking about going to the pictures then this is the film to see.

I have not seen it but there has been some criticism that the film does not acknowledge the important role of the French army in the operation and only makes fleeting reference to the way in which Admiral Ramsay masterminded it. So in that respect not perhaps an entirely accurate historical record despite its visual impact.

Just got in from seeing Dunkirk. I thought it was very good. The French army got an honourable mention as defenders of the line. I'm not to sure about the mixed up time line but overall a good movie.

The Spits look excellent.  The 109 looks like one of the one brought to the UK in the 1960s for the making of "The Battle of Britain"

It's a shame that none of the Buchon He 111s from the film are still flying. Though I understand that at least one is in restoration.

Hi all, managed at last to see the film Dunkirk, really stunning, unremitting tension.  Went with my daughter and had to explain a few things (afterwards) but she enjoyed it as well.
A must see film.

Very good, interesting to see Dirk Bogarde as a baddy!

The Dunkirk film is now out on DVD, finally saw it over the weekend.

Spoiler Alert!

Totally not what I was expecting!
The major lack of dialogue during the opening scenes was a wonderful directorial decision.
Germans portrayed as 'the faceless enemy' was another great directorial choice.
The casting choice of the small boat crew was excellent.
Kenneth Branagh ... basically narrating the storyline?!
Some scenes were dragged out waaaaaaay too long, eg. shooting down of the Heinkel.
Way did only one solider try to shoot down the German fights strafing the beach?
Didn't know a dead engine Spitfire could glide for miles and miles.
Why wasn't the modern buildings on the Dunkirk shoreline CGI'ed out? .... or the container cranes?!?!

Score:  9/10

...Interesting.  I saw 2001 on big screen for the first time last Sat.  Best part of 3h and enjoyed every single minute though it felt 10,000 years (about 10mins short of the "Shawshank Redemption").  But I'm not sure what an hour is since, or whether the opening end ending shots are the same so it's all circular?  There's a substantial chance we all live in the "matrix" anyway so time is just an invented concept to create a sense of reality -right?
