Have finally obtained a copy of The Cruel Sea on DVD from a rental shop going out of business - still looking for a copy of The Ship that died of Shame - both great movies not seen for a long time as we no longer have a TV - too expensive for a subscription to the local pay channel & the alternatives are not worth watching - mostly local football which is of little interest and very little else save propaganda. No Cricket or Rugby to speak of either...........
The Cruel Sea, My favourite "war" movie bar none. period.  So much in this film, it should be preserved forever.  There are so many hard lines in that movie it's unbearable.  But we should all know the results of the folk who did.

Hi all, just seen Midway, very good cgi and the rest of it was 'nt bad either, 8/10.  At least no manufactured love interest and good acknowledgement of the characters at the end of the film.  They glossed over the loss of the Yorktown with just one quick shot.

Hi all, something was bothering me about the views of the ships at sea, and I think I have worked it out.  There is too much detail on the ships for the distance invoved.  The human eye would not see that amount of detail at a distance.  Otherwise the aircraft stuff was very good.

Just watched Midway last night and was mildly surprised. With the cast and cgi effects used I was absorbed with the duality of the story from both sides and kept my attention through out.

Might give Doolittle a watch this afternoon as weather not looking that great.

I watched '1917' last night and the direction by Sam Mendes is superb and Roger Deakins cinematography is so deserving of the Oscar that he has been awarded for it.
Having been involved in film and TV production myself for many years I am astounded by the quality and cleverness of the camera operation which is for the most part
on a 'SteadyCam' rig and right from the start of the film is almost one continuous shot without scene cuts or cutaways. There is so much amazing choreography between
the camera and the lead actors. I'm still trying to work out how a lot of the filming was achieved with the camera traversing such rough terrain and water and from a high to low level POV.
For all the technical and cinematic ingenuity of this film it is also an incredibly moving storyline and the ending had me in tears.
If you've not seen this film, go and watch it now!

This weekends Black & White movie:

The Runaway Bus. 1954 - With, Frankie Howerd, Margaret Rutherford and Petula Clark.

The 'road sign' scene made actually laugh out loud!

Very strange but last night I awoke about 2:30 with a swollen nose struggling to breath and in need of a pee. So I got up had a pee did my best to clear my nose and felt crap. So I went downstairs to search for a tin of oxtail soup or similar. Had to settle for a huge cup of Bovril and just knew I had man flu  :((   Then had another huge cup of Bovril and ibuprofen before going back to bed about 4a.m.  Got up nearly 11 a.m. feeling maybe I got on top of it quick enough and I've just bumbled along all day getting no worse.
Maybe no pictures this week to protect others  %%

Well Andy i think you should contact the Chief Medical Officer with your suggestions, clearly a cheaper protocol than the Hazchem suits etc.  I am more of a Marmite man myself although I do have Bovril as a standby.
As far as soups go perhaps you could tell us the manufacturer so we may all be prepared?  Do you think Lobster Bisque (Baxters of course) would be an adequate substitute?  I feel oxtail has too many connotations that my brain invisages mainly brought on by the unfortunate colour.
My own shortness of breath I can usually put down to my poor wife attempting to silence my snoring with a pillow.

Having had surgery for the slow pee problem I sleep with an emergency peg under the pillow, however I do agree that 2:30 in the morning is just about a bad time for everything unless.... no, I must not go there! %)

regards, but tongue in cheek, manflu is far more serious,

Well while the world is on its head the cinema is out of the question for an indeterminate period.

Some years ago I installed Freesat to avoid paying for TV in addition to the licence but more recently subscribed (annual payment) to Amazon prime for a number of advantages.
Now I've also taken on Netflix too (cancel anytime)
The new Disney channel is now on 7 day free trial so will give that a go too.

My most recent viewing has been the series Firefly and I watched all 14 episodes over which time it grows into a great bunch of characters. Only found out at the end that the series got canned and I can understand why fans were angry  %%  but it dates back to 2002 and has a cult following, many of the cast went on to bigger and better things as a result.

Next we're going to start watching Ozark on Netflix from the beginning, now on season three.

Having grieved over firefly being canned I found a film made 3 yrs later than the series final episode.
I believe it was to appease disgruntled fans and bring everything to a suitable conclusion
Called Serenity I paid £3.49 to watch it on prime. It clearly benefits the viewer who watched the series first and I thought it was a very worthy film and can only give it a ten. If I had to take points away it would be out of disappointment that it is over.

Oh my (going back now) but I always liked "Serenity" film but thought "firefly" series was utter rubbish!

I'm struggling at the moment.  When the oil market crashed in 2014 I cleared out loads of things as I was losing my property including my library of about 300DVD's.  If I told you the best of them were valued at something like 20p at CEX counter, you can imagine I cried when I let them go.  Nevermind!

...However I'm really not taken with Netflix, and terrestrial TV just keeps getting worse.  I'm not convinced my Netflix is right though -it doesn't seem to have the same things I'm "supposed" to have in the UK.  I bought my subscription when I was staying in France but it's all set for UK / English.
