Cars
« on: August 14, 2013, 05:05:11 pm »

Hello all

in December/January i will be looking to in getting a new car but not sure what to get i was looking at the Citroen berligo van-car conversion but the boot is not big enough with the seats folded up to get my model in,They do come out but i would prefer not to do this all the time so i need to look at estates now but there are quite a few the Ford mondeo sticks out as one but what are they like on fuel and tax something thats quite important these days fuel is getting more expensive what do you guys use

all of my Hovercraft are about 5 foot long i dont mind putting the seats down to take them to the lake etc

I have the new Fiat 500L the one same size as the Nissan Quashqi, and although a lovely car, with great family space and super fuel economy if you get a 1.3 diesel, the rear seats don't fold flat and leave an un level boot floor for putting model boats into.....so I would save time by not viewing one of those.

I have tried it with my lifeboats, and it's not good.

Neil  has just hit it on the head.
Make sure the seats fold perfectly flat.
A lot don't .
The only way to find the right one is to
get hands on and test the seat operation.
Makers tend to give the load size by
volume in litres for some reason.
How many litres is a hovercraft?

Vauxhall zafira is a nice flexible car, with up to 7 seats and a huge flat load area when all the seats are down

If you like Ford, why not look at a Focus Estate, they have a lot fo room, handle well, and reasonable fuel economy.

Swallows loads (just like me!). Ours would hold the whole business's stock, display stands and personal luggage. Good build quality too.
Oh - 7 seats - rear ones all fold flat.

I have a Ford Mondeo 2.0TDci Titanium Estate and a Toyota Avensis 2.2Tr Estate on our fleet - both 11 platers,  both have seats that fold flat, the Toyota doesn't require the seat squab to be lifted but the Mondeo does. Capacity wise the Mondeo just has the edge, but the Avensis has lots of under floor storage in the boot for the usual clutter one carries - but at least it's hidden away and doesn't have to be removed before loading.
Economy wise the Mondeo returns a regular 48 mpg, the Avensis only 40mpg - neither car is driven as economically as they could be ( service engineers on call!)
Either car is a competent hauler, my recommendation would be for the Toyota as Tugnut suggested - I reckon it drives better, feeling a lot lighter than the Mondeo (actually quicker too) but not quite as frugal.
