Chattering Servo
« on: August 15, 2013, 03:11:50 pm »

Hi,

I have an old 2 channel Sanwa Dash RC system which I’ve been using on a converted Seaport tug.   Just recently the rudder servo has started to, what I can only describe as ‘chatter’ when I switch on, even though I’m not touching the controls - moving the rudder slightly from side to side.    I’m a complete dumb brain when it comes to electronics so I’d be grateful if anyone can enlighten me as to what’s going on!   Thanks in anticipation.

Either the servo has developed an internal fault, in which case it will require mending with a new one, or part of your wiring path between battery and the insides of the servo has grown a bit of black wire or if its a separate battery for the RX, the RX battery has gone a bit wonky on you.  The last could be a dud cell, or a bad connection.

If you switch your transmitter on first you should be OK.
If you switch the receiver on first it is looking for a signal
and sends spurious signals to the servo.

Hi,

Thanks to you both for your replies.   I won't be able to try out your suggestions until tomorrow and then I'll let you know what happens when I do.   Very grateful for your help.

If neither of the above.I think I read somewhere about interference from other sources may cause this.
Could be a walkie talkie, microwave, or something else like a domestic wiring ring acting as an antenna, causing a problem.
A change location would  solve this.

Thanks to all three of you all is now ok.   I think the problem was a bit of everything you suggested because checking the connections (one a bit loose), re-routing the aerial (it had got tangled up) and moving the tug to a different room to try it out has cured the 'chattering'.   Thanks again for all your help - it's very much appreciated.
