an exceptional model of HMS Sheffield D80, a Type 42 Destroyer, Launched on 10th June 1971 and the second holder of the name HMS Sheffield.A four foot long model of HMS Sheffield - the famous ‘Shiny Sheff’ which was sunk during the Falklands War - has sold at auction for £1,750.The selling price at Sheffield Auction Gallery in Heeley was well above the expected estimates of between £600 and £1,000.
The model was carried on the third HMS Sheffield in honour of her predecessor.
It is housed in a glass case, was built by AB Smith and CM Dove, and stood outside the Petty Officers’ Mess.
It was repaired after it was knocked to the floor in a storm.
“The quality and finish of the model is to a very high standard, as you would expect from an item associated with the Royal Navy, and is probably unique,” said the gallery’s specialist valuer, John Morgan.
HMS Sheffield D80, a Type 42 destroyer, was launched on June 10, 1971, and was the second holder of the name.
Just after 11am on May 4, 1982, an Exocet missile fired from an Argentine aircraft hit the ship and her fate was sealed.
She finally sank on May 10 while being towed to safety. With a loss of 20 lives, the sinking of the Sheffield had for many people brought the Falklands conflict into reality.
The lot also included a bell from the Chief Petty Officers’ Mess and a large collection of photos of the ship and her crew.
Another model up for auction - put up for sale by the Sheffield Sea Cadets Corps, who had members in attendance - was sold for £15,500.
The item was a dockyard model of Motor Vessel Elmworth, finished to the highest standard including details of rigging, superstructure, decking and hull. The Elmworth was a single screw motor ship of 80,000 tons, launched in 1924 and scrapped in 1960.
