MV EIGG, A CALMAC FERRY
« on: August 18, 2013, 05:34:20 pm »

I have decided to separate these two builds as I feel one will detract from the other and so will post pics of each build in their own respective slots.

Now, the Eigg is a small ship of around 80 feet long and can carry around 5 - 6 cars max a time.

she is normal propulsion eg, twin screw with no bow thruster.........easy peasy, and operates on the Oban - Lismore run.

Today I spent time ripping up the car deck as on looking hard at it, it was twisted upwards at the aft end. I have put some inserts in to raise a new deck at that corner and will lay a new deck shortly.

However, the main alteration is at the aft end......the Eigg has a flat transom whereas the little hull I picked up had a rounded one.......so am gluing in some fillets and making a new stern glued onto the old one.....should take some of tomorrow before I can start sanding it down.
I then have the problem of the wrong shaped bulwarks, but this shouldn't be too much of a problem once the stern has been sorted out.

Hi Neil I have a model of the Rassay a similar vessel but if my memory serves me the Eigg has had her bridge heightened. Steve at Scale Hobbies moulds the hull--Good luck with the build--Charlie

Hi Neil
I'll send some pics via email soon. I realised that all the build pics and sailing pics of her are all prints! Long before digital cameras. I'll take some close ups tomorrow and send them on. I meant to say she is 1:43 scale and I have a full set of detail stills taken aboard the Coll in Tobermory in 1995. Would take me a wee while to scan them but you're welcome to have them too.
Regards
Andrew

...Hi Guys...

Here is a picture of a wee fun boat that I built for my 6 year old son Harry...

It is built from scraps of Plywood and is based on the Island Class ferries...

The whole population of Balamory are on the deck...One of these days I will get round to finishing it off for him...

...Best Regards...Norry...

Well, after much personal upset in my life these past couple of months which has left me drained, and with little enthusiasm for anything much except moaning and groaning, I sat down today and thought, "what the hell, get a grip and sort something out............so decided to make a little headway on the smaller of my daughter's two Calmac ferries, the M V Eigg.

so I have chopped and changed the stern and the deck on the little hull I bought from the car boot, straightened it up a little as it had a twist in the stern and blocked it in somewhat to give a more square stern that the Eigg and sisters have..............a wee bit of filler is now needed and will be added tomorrow.

The larger Jupiter will have to wait a couple of months more until the hassles of separation have subsided and I can devote more time to modelling.

It would look good with the taller wheel house on the Eigg, Its also known as the Willie Howe extention, he was a skipper on her and had a wee miss hap. So they extended the wheel house.

hi david.......yes, my daughter agrees with you, and so contrary to what I said earlier, she will be built with the taller ( but crazy looking) wheel house.........besides, there are more pics of her in that incarnation than her earlier one.

seams I've mucked this up a little and been posting the Eigg build on the Jupiter build, so will separate from here.....

Well, back to the build.......have finally got over Christmas and a new year and back to a little model making.........Firstly the Eigg has been filled at the bow to fair in the block of wood making the false bottom.

this will need to be sanded down to make a good finish.
