I have used epoxy on wood for model boat wood covering & been really impressed with how well it lasts & sticks to the wood.
 
In contrast I have used various varnishes on timber around the home & been considerably less impressed. We have Velux windows which get condensation and which do not allow varnish to remain in very good waterproof condition for very long along the bottom of the window where the condensation collects. They need refinishing before autumn & I am tempted to use skinning epoxy instead.
