I'm ashamed to admit......
« on: August 22, 2013, 01:05:43 pm »

That having reached the age of 58 and living my whole life in the port of Hull, I have never entered the maritime museum. In all those years I have been aboard many boats and ships from visiting submarines and warships to trawlers, tramp steamers (those days!) and 'grand' ships of the ilk of Ellermans Wilson line.

Today however that changed. Having a day off my wife and I visited the maritime museum situated in the old docks building in Queen Victoria square. What a wonderful experience! From whaling to fishing to commercial ships and warships, it covered the entire period from the 15th century up to the 80's. Admittedly nothing has really happened here since then {-)

Many many models are shown in glass cases, great for examining detail work, the models ranged from shipyard half models to complete museum pieces, taking in minuture works of art in bone made by french prisoners of war from the napoleonic era to 8ft monsters made for the shipping companies. there are even figureheads hanging on the walls, you have to look up as well as around!

If you are in the area and have time to spare I can only recommend a visit. I've pasted two pics, albeit not very good, forgot my camera and had to use the wife's handbag point and click thing. It's a humber sloop, a fact I didn't know, one one side of the Humber they were sloops, on the other they were barges, solely down to the way they were rigged. This is a nice cutaway model showing al the ribbing inside. Its poor quality but the flash was on and shooting through a glass case.
