RNLI Baby Severn Class
« on: August 24, 2013, 05:21:06 pm »

I note the RNLI has stocks of its previously very successful Severn Class radio controlled model back in stock at £59.95' that's £20 cheaper than advertised on EBay.

Cheers

That's inflation for you!  I also think they have missed a trich, this edition should have been a Tamar Class, from a collectors point of view that would have been extremely beneficial I think.

I just bought the Severn Class in its box having never been used for £15.00' the original batteries were corroded and the coach line faded other than that its brilliant, now I'm going to modify it!

This will be my first ever attempt at anything to do with RC boats, I figure if I mess it up then so be it I only paid £15.  That said I have read what others have done and it looks fairly straight forward.  The bit that fills e with fear is drilling the hull for the two prop shafts!

£20 cheaper?  In some cases £55 cheaper.

That's shocking!  Mind you I was selling slot racing cars until recently and I found people would do that just to keep their name on an advert.

Hello experts,
I'm just converting one of the original Severn lifeboats from 27 MHz etc, and now note that the ling awaiting new version is out. At 1/20 that makes it a big model and if my maths is near correct  34 inches long..
Has anyone purchased one?  What is the true range?  And what is the propulsion in this new version, pod engines like before (which leaked) or have they now put internal motors in (plenty of room).
Any other comments most welcome.  I am doing my conversion for a lad in Wales, but at £59.95 new this new version would be my obvious way to direct him with his dish - instead of to me for a smaller boat.  Remember, at his age the bigger the better!!!

From RNLI website:

A 1:20 scale model of the Severn class lifeboat now with a digital radio controlled handset and modified two motor propulsion system. Outdoor operating range of 40-50 meters. Batteries supplied. Age 8+. Size: 29 x 49 x 14cm (11½ x 19 x 5½”).

... you'd be lucky to get 20m ( with no other electric devices around) .... if that!

I've started to convert my £15.00 EBay bargain, as this is my first project I've had to buy everything from scratch, including batteries and charger etc.  Now looking for a servo and controller, I estimate that by the time I have finished I will have spent circa £170!

Now toying with the idea of spraying the bottom of her just to allow me to learn the techniques.

I guess at the end of the day when I started I never knew what an ESC actually was so whilst out of pocket what value do I place on learning a very good hobby?
