« on: April 20, 2014, 03:33:42 pm »

Hi,
As per title, I am looking for a 20mm to 25mm groovy mast but can only find up to 14.5mm. does anyone know where I might get such a beast?
Thanks

Hi,
That really is a beast of a mast to find suppliers of groovy masts that size is probably impossible, Sailsetc sell their own alloy Groovies extruded especially for them and they once did Carbon groovies but no more.

Ok, I remember that there is a German company that make a high end Marblehead in fact my friend has just took delivery of one. They are called Walicki they use High Modulas Carbon Masts about 25mm maybe a tad smaller after you have picked yourself up off the chair you just fell off looking on there website my friend has had 8 rigs built with his boat! Tony,
That hurt when I fell over! They are some prices, hate to think of postage costs. Thanks for the link.
It will probably be aluminium then if I can find some.
Thanks.

At those costs I wouldn't worry much about postage. Only a small add on.
I would worry more about customs duty, living outside the EU.

BTW
Why does it need to be 20mm+ ?
Scale appearance?
Strength?

If this is known, maybe people can suggest alternative solutions.

Hi TigerTiger,
The mast is for a 2mtr boat that will be about 2.8 mtrs high so its really for scale appearence but also for strength, the sail area will be about 2sq mtrs in total! I have a few ideas in mind if I can't find a groove section.

Tony,
Will look at those, thanks.

I made a 1/6th scale yacht many years back and used a length of yacht genoa luff spar section as my mast. It worked well and looked right as it was the correct aerofoil section. I can't remember which mast or sailmaker let me have it but I remember it was very cheap as, for them, it was an offcut!

Here's one to try:

Thanks Chris, will look into that.
By the way, is that a Colvic UFO 31? possibly this one?

Yep, that's my boat! Still miss it, but when I downsized house it had to go. It was a model of a UFO 31 I crewed on in the '70s on the east coast. Not a Colvic, but a Landamores of Wroxham; hull no.2. Colvic did mould most of the hulls though.

Hi Chris,
I think we have talked before, but if not I have a unstarted deck and separate hull moulding for the UFO 31 (same as yours) that is waiting to be built. Hopefully after I finish the next two boats! but you know how it goes.
Thanks for your suggestion, I may be able to get masts for both models out of one piece of luff spar.

Just a bog standard boat, if there is such a thing, I would like to fit a Genoa on it but we'll see when the time comes.

Nige,

I have sold the boat now but I remember the section being about 30mm x 15mm and 1950mm high.

Good data here:-
