Thunderbolt twin electric build
« on: August 28, 2013, 02:20:20 pm »

Hi all!

Just received the new hull From Mart / Waverider mouldings today and started to work with it asap.

I like the general shape of this boat but that many air intakes makes it look a bit silly imo.
-and for electic motors the air cooling is not even needed

So 10minutes after I took the hull of the box this is what I did.

Got the dremel out and cut open 3 of the intakes and filled them with cloth.

Next I will start with the filler job on it and hoping that the end result will be good.

While the resin is curing I need to think a good way of truing the sponsons and finding the filler to do some finishing touches for the seam. -and actually the seam is pretty good compared to what I ve seen on usa made thunderbolts.

Found a leftover piece of carbon and it was just correct size for the hull,   Mart installed one layer of carbon when he built this hull but I guess there is never too much reinforcement if the boat flips at speed so I added 1 more. :-))

It is still curing but here is 1 pic of the process.

Got the first coat of filler on the hatch, next one will make it perfect.

Started with the motor mounts. still needs some finishing touches and motor mounting holes .  -8mm carbon so should be plenty strong. Now where is that drill...  -I also made that plate from about 25 layers of cloth and epoxy.

Hi Pate funny you should mention motor mounts I just made some for a customer, mine are only 4 mm 3 layers of 650 g carbon and epoxy, plenty strong, used same method for twin rails for rcmk gas motors did those 6 mm ,pretty sure 4 mm is plenty though  :-)) .
Your 8 mm should be indestructable  :o .Heres a pic of his goodies so far.
Hes going with the 5694 1000 kv sss inrunners I sell, twin alien esc 300 amp and 8-10 s lipos so you got competition  ;) .

Hi Mart, wow that should fly with thous motors!

The motors I have planned for this are the 1250kv outrunners and 4250watts each this should not be that slow neither... -I know it is just numbers but both motors combined 8500watts or 11.4 hp sounds plenty.

the 4mm would have been plenty strong for my build also , I first did 3mm mounts and they just looked a bit thin but were strong.

I did the 8mm ones just for outrunner use since they are mounted only at front so no rear support. I actually tried something new, the mounts were 6mm at first but I laminated 1mm sheet on the rough side and few layers of cloth between them to join the pieces wet/wet & make nice smooth surface on both sides.

I also started with servo mount, no pics yet will finish it first but it is something nice  :D

To be honest Pate I think a single one of these would be more than enough but twins are just cool  :-)) .Yes good point about the outrunners, ill be making a cradle support for the rear of these big inrunners for him to fit when hes at that stage.
Look forward to seeing your build as it progresses,i hope to start my twin Apache build over the winter, been saying that for 2 years though  %)  lol.

I was thinking of better way to secure the lipos then velcro, wanted something good looking and easy to use.

here is what I tried.

First I laminated some carbon cloth to make about 2mm plate, then I took some measurements of 6s lipos and took the rotary tool out(for the carbon not lipo lol) .

The packs will be held using shrink tube(only had tape now, but I have ordered the tubing)  and this allows some cog adjustments also.

This is what they look now, should be strong enough and 1 thumbscrew is all that is needed to remove the pack.
(under the plate is 4mm stainless nut epoxied in place that the thunbscrew threads to)

The thumbscrews were only available purple (not really my fav color...) so I removed the anodizing and polished also.

Ordered the motors

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=42794

4250watts -and the color matches with my plans also lol

and Mart, did you notice the stingers telescoping part can be flipped by removing the grubscrews so it can be pulled out and they can be made shorter...

Got the motors, they are same size as t600 but a lot stronger magnets.

Got the primer and black base coat on. Not any major issues with the paint so far, but painting with rattle cans and outdoors is a lottery...(bugs,dust ,rain, wind, cold etc crap) Will wait for few days and mask it off and spray the silver and clear next.

Notice the window groove/frame and the 3 air intake holes are missing...

Ordered some decals also, this boat will be known as FBRacing (fat boy racing) ,since I am not that tiny

Still trying to do the colors I planned from the beginning, black and silver paint and orange decals. Will see how this turns out.

Coming along nicely, ive got some of these decals on order to see what theyre like, they made them custom size for me,have them coming in 2 sizes to see what works best. They have lots of dif designs too, heres a few samples.

Got the silver and clear on + some of the decals. ALOT of wetsanding and polishing done also.
Still waiting for the orange stripes for separating the silver/black.

Got the servo/esc mount done the servo will be hidden with the escīs -trying to make this really clean looking so no messy wiring etc.

The transom felt a bit thin (did not see any ply?) so I added 2mm carbon "transom doubler". -just to be safe it prolly would have been fine without.

Did the "hatch holding nut mounts"(thats a weird sentence lol) ,and used knurled black nylon nuts(looked for these for days...)  and stainless bolts to do the hatch holding screw thingys.

Also got the couplers and connectors etc small stuff so soon I can install everything.

So it is starting to look like there is a smallish chance that this will be ready for next summer...

And the deck without the 3 air vents I removed looks much longer and better now imo.

Looks killer Pate nice job,as regards the transom it had 3 layers of glass and two of carbon no need for plywood plus as you didn't require rails and wanted the carbon look I assumed youd leave it carbon, adding the carbon doubler wont hurt though.

Hi Mart, yeah I thought that was it.

Not questioning the build quality just making sure this will be bullet or at least  pellet proof when done. :-))

The motor mounts are waiting for my new dremel to arrive  and then the build really starts. I may need anther project for the winter this is going together fast...

Been a while since I touched this project, I have 3 other builds going on and kind of lost my motivation when the new paintjob started to crack few weeks after polishing it  <:(

but now I will take a look of this one, leaving the paint stuff to last.

Today I started to fit the mounts, one is on and I need to figure out best way to get the other one to match on other side so I can use same flex cables on both side if I want to change the rotation.

few pics

The tube angle may look a bit too curved but the shaft turns freely so it should be fine. -and it needs this angle cause I wanted to install motors some distance from bottom so water wont get to them if some liquid finds the way in.

It has been really long since I last worked with this boat, sorry!

I had some great(got married and we have a daughter now)  and bad stuff (home had moisture/mold and had to move few times) happening and simply had not room or time to work with these large hulls.

Now I have room and some time to finish this.

The paint has been removed and the build is going nice speed.

Both motor mounts are on and after the filler/primer is on, I will install all the bits minus hardware on transom and hit the paint again.

Hoping this is done in few weeks, but I have 6 weeks of work starting 15th of next month so the latest this will be done then.

Hi Mart! And thanks!

The motors are 8 pole 1250kv outrunners (4250 watts each  %% ) . -Better quality then T600 what I have read, and much stronger magnets.

Escīs are on their way, 2xTurnigy 180A seakings.

Batteries are 2x6S 5300mAh 65C Turnigy bolt(LIHV). 1 pack /motor (should be plenty, over 300A cont. lol)

Will start with tiny 40mm plastic props if they even work lol, to 45,51,57mm and finally  hoping it will work with stainless 5517/3īs when Iīm done.

Hoping to get  100km/h /60mph reliably.

Sounds good mate i changed my mind on the large Apache twin and am now going single 5694 /1000 kv on 8 s using 240 amp hv swordfish esc. A friend is using this motor in a 72" deep vee on 8 s and it seems plenty of power but i think he needs to prop down some as hes using a large 70 mm prop lol.
Forgot to say sorry to hear about your paint issues that sounds like something that happened to me with the Apache,i didn't have the patience to remove it and start again so i covered the whole boat with a wrap apart from the deck that i redid yellow .
I also made a new sealable hatch using Plexiglas and ive made a carbon plate to sheath it with for extra strength,it will be held down with usuall pins at front and thumb screws at rear ,hopefully it will be enough to create a seal without using tape but we shall see.
