You might not see much from there with other apartments in the way and the Cruiser Wharf is where they are talking of the Russian beast going. Will block the view nicely. They are also already warning of road closures being in place for the weekend.

The Tall ships have entered Sydney Harbour.

Some of the pics give us a reminder that in blowy conditions, ships carried a lot less canvas. Something us modellers forget when we are trying to 'optimise' our sail plans.

I watched the ABC TV coverage of the warships entering the harbour this morning, and it was a wonderful sight. I  may be biased but I think that Sydney Harbour is the finest in the world, and it certainly looked magnificent today.

The Australian ships were led by HMAS Sydney, followed in line astern by HMAS Darwin, HMAS Perth, HMAS Parramatta and HMAS Bundaberg, looking somewhat insignificant behind the larger ships. I was especially watching for Bundaberg, as I had been on board her at her home base, Cairns, in far north Queensland, only last Sunday. She left Cairns at 1600 that same day bound for Sydney. The photo is from the ABC News website.

No you are not biased Peter %) ....... I also watched the vessels this morning ........remembering that I have spent many many hours on board both the same HMAS Sydney [03] & HMAS Darwin [04] trying to get the GMLS13 launcher system working as it should! <*< <*< <*<
Some 25 years ago I took my family to our 75th Naval centenary & we had the best view in Sydney.....pearched on the northern ferry wharf @ my Garden Island work place ...........Derek

Lucky you!  :embarrassed:
It must have been the NSW service as there was very little on Melbourne ABC.  When they mentioned it, it was mostly a presenter raving on about what was happening and no pictures of ships.   Channel 9 did show HMS Daring entering the Harbour.  <:(

Brian it was ABC News 24, who had a nearly 2 hour long coverage of the event. Some of the camera work was a bit dodgy, or perhaps it was the director, as we sometimes saw shots of open water, but it was generally a good and informative coverage.

Don't want to 'hijack' this thread, but please allow me a brief reminiscence (Hey, did I actually spell that 12-letter word correctly?) :police:
Those photos reminded me of our naval assembly in 1985 in Bedford Basin, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the creation of the RCN. Our G-G was embarked in CFAV Quest for the sailpast. It was raining, but the G-G managed to look 'dignified' wearing a costume of a style usually associated with H.M Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

After the sailpast, the ships weighed anchor and proceeded alongside the Halifax dockyard. All went smoothly until a Federal German Navy frigate tried to weigh anchor. It turned out that her anchor had snagged the remains of an old Volkswagen Beetle. West German ship/West German car; what are the odds? It's my theory that the Beetle was feeling homesick, and, having in some inexplicable way recognized something 'West German' about the FGS frigate's anchor, 'grabbed on' in the hope of a trip home! O0  It's a true story :police: ; I only wish that I had the imagination to dream this up! O0
