AMERICA'S CUP CHALLENGE.
« on: September 08, 2013, 08:27:59 pm »

I watched the America's Cup Challenge this afternoon straight after the Italian Grand Prix............and found it utterly fascinating............

Those weren't yachts though............they were space ships cutting a track through the water..........

I was just awe struck by the technology and the way the foils were kept to the water....a long way from J class yachts and a million miles away from the "America" plus the way the crews kept running from port to starboard steering and trimming cockpits on different tacks..........and truly enjoyed it all.......will watch that again.

did anyone else find it interesting

Not very graceful as "yachts" go............but mighty interesting and amazing techno to watch.

Thanks Neil, pretty amazing boats the technology is stunning. I did not know  that the Americas cup had changed so much & was using completely new boats. When I was in Maui I got to sail in the 12 metre yacht "America" that lost in Australia when Connor's boat "Stars & Stripes" beat it to defend the cup which he won.( I hope I have the name right ) It was a great sail despite the fact that they had shortened the Mast. I watched for a little while. Yes, amazing technology, but you're right, they're not yachts. It's a bit like turning up to watch Usain Bolt run, only to find he's wearing hover-shoes!

I'm afraid I turned over after a few minutes.  :((  Give me the J class or even the yachts that introduced the idea of a winged keel, but stayed in the water.

Yes Neil, I was absolutely gobsmacked. Chin on chest stuff. Last night they went more into the technical aspects of the boat which answered a few questions. Now, if I made a model, how many channels would I need….........................?

I noticed this whilst on the flixxy site -

http://www.flixxy.com/high-tech-car-door.htm

Why hasn't it been taken up by the mainstream manufacturers?

Interesting but I would like to see the crash test results.

PS I enjoyed the coverage of the racing as well, I thought that they were very graceful in their own way.

Amazing technology, both the boat and the car door. I'm still waiting for my hover car conversion, silver stay warm/cool suit and holidays on Mars...well this is the 21st Century.

Hi warspite, I had a look at a few more videos on You tube and you can see the action of lifting and lowering the front foils.  Apparently the rules were tweaked to enable extra 'winged keels' to be adjustable.  They also tilt to change the angle of the foils in the water.
I am all for innovation, I expect it is expensive, but they do look graceful.  This does not always happen when the rules are worked on.
Then there is the main sail which is a 3 dimensional structure similar to an aircraft wing.  There is a video of an overturned yacht and you wince as the sail / wing etc collapses.

I remember seeing what appeared to be half a curved wing at the base - it was a quick glimpse from the front, yet from the side it was almost neglible and may have only been the size of the vertical spar, I take it the white bands depict how deep they push these foils in the water based upon the sea state, utterly amazed at how little foil is in the water to push the 7 tonnes out of it.

Hi all, I have just watched races 3 and 4 (best of 13) and the commentators talk a lot about Oracle Team USA and Jimmy Spithill who is captain never once mentioned that he is an Australian from Sydney.

Jimmy Spithill's nationality was mentioned once, briefly, at the start of Day 1's telecast.

I was constantly expecting the damn little "hydrofoils"(?) to buckle under what must have been INCREADIBLE strain/pressure  %%

And, like it was said before, it's fantastic how they get those airplanes to fly across the water like that!!   :o   %)

BTW, Did you see the crewmember slide off one of the craft??  That HAD to hurt!!!

I watched some of the racing from Fort Mason, they have incredible speed that is not done justice on the tv. On Tuesday the American yacht came out for practice, it had a lot of support boats around it they all left it and this yacht just took off as if it was jet powered. It was instantly on one hull tearing towards the Golde Gate Bridge, awesome.
In San Francisco they are very passionate about the race the water front was packed on Thursday, all listening to the live comentery, watching every move the boats made.

no offence intended to US  MBM members but isn't that typical of any commentaries from there.  i'm surprised they even mention they are competing against another team.

c'mon guys.........all this grouching and posturing..................until the Kiwi's took it off the yanks for the first time in over a hundred years, jut a few short years ago, we all know that the guys on the other side of the pond at the San Diago Yacht Club changed the rules of the races every time the brits came near to winning....Tommy Lipton's attempts in the 1930's proved that when the "J"'s were accused of carrying too much sail and penalised.

it was as big a joke as the judging and point awarding on Eurovision...except we stood a better chance winning Eurovision. {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

Hello
In the 1930s Sir Tommy Sopwith got beaten by the Yanks while he was sailing Endeavour.
When he returned home, he put on the front page of the Times newspaper the following.

                                            Brittania Rules the Waves
                                            America Waives the Rules
Still true today !!!.
John. :-))
