Battleship Yamato DVD
« on: June 12, 2007, 06:37:05 pm »

Hi Everybody, just seen these on Ebay, one from Ireland and one direct from Japan. It states the Japanese one is region 2 Europe, with the other region 3 Asia.
I don't think they are dubbed or subtitled, but reckon are still going to be good watching. ::) ::) ::)

Cheers............Tony

It looks a bit like pearl harbour.

Perhaps they will have a brave Japanese cook shooting down 13 enemy planes with an old rifle.

I purchased a Chinese version of this DVD last year. It is in Japanese, no subtitles. Although I don't speak any Japanese, I found the movie utterly understandble anyway. The emotions and facial expressions, etc will be easy to understand. It is a powerful and moving film.

Hi, yes they were anti aircraft shells called San-Shiki in Japanese. They weighed 1360 Kgs and contained about 900 rubber thermite incendiary and 600 steel fragments. There are some sectional drawings of them in the Skulski book, but it does not say how effective they were. Hope this helps......Smudge

The one thing I did read about these shells was that they were poorly made and the copper drive bands were badly machined and caused excess wear
on the rifling of the 18 inch guns. the other problem was they caused problems with spotting for the smaller guns because of the huge explosion.

Just a little titbit of information I stumbled accross some narative in Warship the other day and Yamato class were designed to have their 9 x 18" guns replaced with 6 x 20" guns and the barbettets and turrets were designed to do this. The Japs did this with a number of their 6" crusiers deliberatley having common fittings to upgun tripple 6" to twin 8" which they did.

Now that would be interesting!!

If you flew into a round of "BeeHive" you were ripped to bits, but the big guns could only put up a wall, they could not track specific aircraft.  Somewhere I noted that torpedo bombers which had to make a predictable approach were very vulnerable.
