Here's a thought from, perhaps, a rather odd angle:
There was a type of geared steam locomotive sold under the 'Shay' name in North America. A Shay had a horizontal boiler offset (usually) to the left, with a steam motor on the right, driving the wheels through a series of jackshafts and bevel gears.
So,, there have been a great many Shay model locomotives built with dummy steam motors, with a hidden electric motor powering the drivetrain. Shouldn't be all that difficult to find some scale plans, given the fact that this 'Internet' thing seems to be catching on!
Shays were powered by 2-cylinder or 3-cylinder motors, depending upon size. Motors were vertical in-line, non-compound, and I'm not sure which valve linkages were fitted.
Your model boat could have a large dummy boiler containing a large motor, geared to a (hidden) driveshaft leading aft to spin your dummy motor, then aft to the screw.
Hope this helps, even if it is unconventional!
