Newbie from France - Vosper RTTL lover.
« on: October 12, 2013, 12:53:44 pm »

Bonjour from Bretagne (near Saint-Malo, Brittany, France)

Just getting back into model boats after marriage, kids, work, etc etc.
When I were a lad, amongst others, I built the Aerokits Sea Scout, and RAF Crash Tender. R/C’d them – seem to remember with a Macgregor single channel set using valves!  Both had IC engines – 1cc ME Heron, and a 2.5cc ED something. Just don’t ask what happened to them!

Recently tried Helis, but spent more time repairing them as it turns out I have absolutely no skills in flying the b’s!

Anyway, just taken delivery of a 28” Vosper RTTL from KitShack. Intend to build two of these to begin with, as I remember watching them many times at RAF Holyhead MCU (RTTLs 2769 & 2770 I think).  Then I intend to scratch build a 1/12 scale one.

So a question, in the 28” model I want to install two shafts, two motors (direct drive) as per the original. I want the model to be fast. Can anyone suggest what size motors, shaft & props I could use???

Jonko.

Hi and welcome to mbm, sorry can't help with the information but would be very interested in the build if you post it, often looked at the kitshack models on ebay and they look ok

Bonjour,

I am currently running a 34" Fireboat on a Graupner 600 8.4v, 4mm dia shaft &
37mm propellor. This powers her quite fast enough, for me anyway.

For a 28" boat, as yours is,  two motors of this spec would be more than enough
to give plenty of speed. You could use two 600 7.2v motors which run at
a higher RPM with slightly less weight in battery(s) of course.

A number RTTL's that I have read about, on other sites do use 600 size motors.
You may find Graupner motors hard to obtain at this time due to company
re-organisations though.

hi ya there, if you do a search of the forum you will find there are loads and loads of RTTL builds and reconditioning of them.  if you go on the 600 E route, it will be adequate to drive this launch at a fair speed.  I have put a link onto the model I have built and where I use MTronik vision motors; and this brings it up onto the plane no problem.   The only variation I did I stuck to the true launch setup where both the props rotate in the same direction and this can be a handful for handling it can .catch you unawares.

With reference to Blubird's post and your question about which motor to use,
I have only last week fitted a Mtroniks vision 500 motor myself, into a smallish (24"long)
boat. The motor casing measures 51mm long. Motor runs on voltages up to 12v.

So its a mid size motor, slightly shorter than the 600 type (57mm).
Performance wise I haven't been able to properly assess yet as it was running with
a propellor that was too large at 40mm. I will replace with a 35mm prop eventually.

Hope this is of some use to you.....

The first Kitshack 28" vosper rttl kits were sold with a single 540 brushed motor, a 225mm 4mm shaft and a 45mm 3 blade prop. If you were looking to twin motors, it might be worth thinking on the lines of two 280 size with 225mm 2mm shafts and 30mm 3 blade contr rotating props.
I personally dont like brushless motors unless they can provide higher toroque at fairly low revs, and I think that to get a good scale performance a motor with max 5000 no load revs can give a good turn of speed from a standing start without being like a racing boat. But t is all about linking a good prop.

Kitshack do make a 12th scale RTTL kit too, being 68" long, at a pretty good price. Would suit a good IC motor or two low revving 900's such as can be got from Action Electronics, with three blade scale props.

I have always tried different sized props on my boats, during trials, to see what
set up gives the optimum performance and quite often the smaller prop
will perform as good if not better than a larger one, especially on boats that are
designed to 'plane'.
In fact 2 blade props work better on my faster style boats.

All motors that I have used are very much higher revving 12-16k rpm
(brushed motors that is).
I agree, Wombat that prop sizes make all the difference.

Some excellent info there - thanks guys  :-)) :-))
I intend to do as Bluebird and stick to the original design and have both props rotate in the same direction. I realise it could be a handful to control, but it can't be any worse than those b helis I have. Can it? If it is, I'll change it on the second build.

Does anyone have a working link for Kitshack? I suspect that they are'nt trading anymore. Their Facebook page does'nt appear to be active either. I don't think the Ebay trader is Kitshack although he has a small stock for sale.

Odd though that both Kitshack and Ebay seller are based in Kings Lynn Norfolk, plus the seller on ebay sold out of kits before and now has them back in stock.  What were the quality like of original kits?

hi all

Just wondering if chap on Ebay, who is selling the kits for the RTTL, may be one of those sellers who purchase bankrupt stock?    Looking at his feedback he seems to have sold quite a selection of items dealing with modelling of various forms/fishing/outdoor hobbying items etc.   He may have acquired various amounts of each item to sell on.  Could be... just a thought.

Or, :-) he is the ex-owner of Kitshack Company selling surplus stock as has been suggested.    I would think if the administrators had been called in, all assets would have been sold off to the highest bidder.

aye

its a shame tho, cos there's another modelling company gone.......

To be honest does it really matter, who has them still a reasonable price if the kits are any good. Which is why I was asking if quality was any good?

I,ve just started to build one of these Kitshack 28" RTTL's.

My kit was £38 from Ebay and included plans, instruction sheet, several printed balsa sheets for "stringers and chines??" and then lots of balsa and ply sheets for everything else.

No fittings, rudder, prop shaft etc.

It seems to be going together well (first boat I've built)

I saw the seller I bought from had another at £70
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kitshack-28-RAF-Target-Towing-Launch-Kit-laser-cut-parts-/281787829174?hash=item419bdd0bb6

only difference seems to be laser cut parts rather than printed..

As an aside I'm planning to build mine with twin props can anybody give me any information on appropriate rudder size, I'm guessing twin 40 -45 mm rudders with 30 -35 mm props..???

PS Bluebird your builds are superb and great source of information and research
