Sunset Ceremony
« on: October 12, 2013, 03:06:47 pm »

Could anyone tell me on average how many, and what bandsmen would have been involved in the Sunset Ceremony aboard a Battleship (HMS RAMILLIES) please?
Looking far ahead,to when my model of her is finished,I aim to finish off each days sailing with the band playing the evening hymn and last post.
Thanks,
Mick F

Hi Mick
Probably just one bugler unless it was a full ceremonial then the full band. might even just be broadcast over the ships tanoy just like on modern ships. bear in mind sunset is a essentially a bugle piece of music.

Hi Mick,
Am I right in thinking that the bandsmen were Royal Marines ?

Might be worth contacting the RM Museum at Southsea

thanks Kev and Glen.Certainly on the Capital ships the band would have been Royals (my dad was one of them!)
I think I might get away with a couple of drummers and a couple of buglers,to give an idea of what it was like!

As Glen says, Just a Bugler on the Quarterdeck with the Officer of the Day and the Bunting "idoit".
The OOD would be saluting as the Ensign was lowered. You would need another Bunting lowering the Jack.

The correct ships name for Britannia Royal Naval College is HMS Dartmouth.
HMS Britannia was a hulk that was moved from Portland as it was too windy and moored in the River Dart
along with the hulk HMS Hindustan.

The Royal Yacht was named HMY Britannia.

BRNC has always been known to RN personnel as 'Dartmouth'
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Britannia

Hence my assuming you meant the Yacht.  O0 O0 O0

Any one interested I have the written music for RN bugle calls , there 61 in total. Including 2 for the Fleet Air Arm. If you want a copy send me your emails, then you can record them if you someone who can blow a bugle. On capital ships most calls where by bugle once.
