Skirmishing
« on: October 19, 2013, 05:23:25 pm »

Talking with an old exRN guy today and the word
skirmishing came up.
Who remembers doing it , and what did the junior forces
call it ???

I've never heard of it in a naval context.
But, there's a signal in ATP-1 Vol II (the NATO/Allied signal book) that looks something like this:
TA 6  Fight a _____ action.
1. Delaying
2. Harassing
3. Withdrawing
4. Blocking
I can't remember all the options, but there's probably a modern equivalent to Skirmishing in there somewhere.

Not so Happy Hour  <:( <:( <:(

It was litterpicking in shore establishments.
Normally carried out by trainees or men
under punishment.

In the RAF we had defaulters (jankers) which meant turning up at the guardroom at inconvenient times, in bet uniform, for the OO to inspect. If there was something special on, like an open day, defaulters could be seconded to the SWO's team. Litter picking or FOD plods could involve the whole station.

Hello,

In the Army when we were out on patrols, our RSM used to call out "Skirmish the Area", which meant we had to pick up EVERYTHING that was not there when we arrived !.
Cig ends, spent matches, all litter of all sorts.

Known in the Fleet Air Arm as a "FOD plod". FOD = Foreign Object Damage or anything you wouldn't want sucked into the aircraft air intake!

In older times and armies, a skirmisher was someone who would operate in front of the main body to create alarm and annoyance and thus distract the opposition and/or gather information.
With naval forces, in Napoleonic times, it would be the job of such as Frigates to scout ahead of the main fleet and if possible make a nuisance of themselves.  20th century, substitute Destroyers.
