Prawn Trawler "Debrene-Adele"
« on: October 29, 2013, 10:55:51 am »

Hi guys, thought I might throw up an old build, one of my models I built nearly 30 yrs ago, started it in 78 finished it in 84 in between trips to sea,its made to 1:16 scale of our  68' Timber trawler we built at the end of our street in Byron Bay  N.S.W  Australia, sorry about the quality of some or most of the photo's as didn't have good quality camera back then.
1 - Start of model with her bulkheads in position, made the keel deadwood ,hogstreak stemstep and stem out of what we decked the real boat with ,what we call Colonial Teak (yellowy colour hardwood, nice smell when cutting it) I cut the Stem Knee and stern Knee from cut off branchs (seasoned) off our Piecan nut tree.
2 - Decking made from Red ceder, from old window frames scavanged from the local tip (can't do that any more ) then cut into strips.
3 - Showing the hull and the bulwarks nearly completed, bulwark post from oregon the bulwarks planked with red ceder, the hull was strip planked with ply and then fiberglassed inside.
4 - Fitting the hatch combings and w-house base made from oregon (from old bed frames ,good tight grain ).
5 - Making the frame for the splash board around the top of the deck house.
6 - Cramping the ply around the curve of the splash board...

Thanks for that Peter, here is some more of my old build.
1 - hull and w-house's
2 - She had back exhaust stacks with davits for fish trawling.
3 - Inside view of the lay out in the flying bridge.
4 - Start of the main trawling gantries.
5 - Skegs and shafts fitted for the spare props, at the time she (real deal) was the only registered triple screwed trawler in Australia.

Some more for 2day.
1 - Start of my 3" inch propeller for the model, my Father turned a block of wood on the lathe for me (looking like a small saucer as she had lay back blades)
2 - After shaping her using a fret saw, chisel and file .
3 - At the time down the road from us Ballina Slipway & Engineering were operating they also had the foundary there for casting ,so for a small fee they used my propeller as the patern  and cast one out of Gunmetal for me.
3 - Next 3 photo's are of a model engine 6" long of the D343 Cat Engine we had in the (real deal) made this while prawning off Wiepa G.O.C . I had this in the engine room of the model, with the shaft running into the gearbox, right through out the front of the sump below the power take off then into the next Compartment where I had an electric motor attached ,with no gearbox (mistake, should have known better)

:o ....... "at the time she (real deal) was the only registered triple screwed trawler in Australia"
BB.....would the main engine have been used for longer distance travel & the P&S auxiliaries been used singularly when trawling?...... Derek

Thanks guy's. the main engine was the propulsion for steaming and trawling ,we installed the extra screws for extra grunt for fish trawling and also a safety factor in case the main broke down while working the Gulf, which it did once and we came back about 240 miles to port on the auxilaries, but as we did most of our fishing in the gulf ,we were dragging them around waste of fuel and speed as you had to lock them off ,other wise you would damage the hydrolic gearbox's. We only ever run the 3 together once from Brisbane to Brunswick Hds averaged 15 kts  but even back then when fuel was only 16 cents a litre  we couldn't afford to warrant it.

Hi there, some more photos of this build.
1 - giving the inside of the hull a paint after the inside was fully fibreglassed.
2 - the lay out with my dummy engine and the electric motor in the next compartment..Don't laugh but my gear in it was Dick Smith set up, at least I didn't have any problems with the speed control in her like i have with the electronic ones ?
3 - Showing the speed control and the receiver .
4 - My battery frame sitting above the engine room and under the sorting tray lid.
5 - Everthing dismantled for painting.
6 - The lift off wheel house's to be able to install the lead ballast.
7 - She is all assembled  ready for her float test.
8 - Yes,,she floats the old bath tubs do come handy..

Hi Derekwarner, you r right they are nice and simple just a rea astat. well here's the last of these to put up.
1 & 2 - I had a local sign writer  paint the name on her same shape colours and shading as the original, the only thing he baulked at doing the same across the trasmon  (don't blame him) but he did a top job on it.
3 -  Testing her for ballast i don't remember how much the actual model weighed , but had to put 2 lbs in the stern and 8 lbs (total 10 lbs lead) in the focastle area, under the forward section of the Deckhouse.
4 - A much younger me with the finished result, had the wooden prop that was used as the pattern for the gunmetal prop bolted to the front of the deckhouse as on the original. And with the Danforth anchors I made the spare out of perspect, and another in pieces as patterns for a Jeweler  in Cairns whom made a Sterling Silver Danforth ($150 back then) for her main anchor , which you can't see to well going by my crappy photo.
The last photo is taken at our home port of Brunswick Heads Boat Harbour beside the (real deal) in 1984.
Thank you for viewing.......
