Kitchen rudder
« on: October 31, 2013, 06:19:43 pm »

I am left with three possible solutions:
Build a gear box I have the plans (big thanks to Malcom Beak) sources of gears would be a help.
Build a variable pitch prop
Build a Kitchen rudder
From the title you will notice that at the moment I am moving towards thr KR.
I have found the following link http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?156290-Kitchen-rudder-model-boat.
Any more information would be great. :-)) :-))
If this is in the wrong area please feel free to move

Just to play devils advocate %)  Why not modify the engine to piston valve.
cheers

Hi, The kitchen rudder was developed  because the engine of the day could not reverse, just like the Stuart 10. The port of Tyne had one on one of the workboats. They work quite well and it is worth going down this road. Engine at constant speed, just close the cups and go slower, close them altogether and go astern, good luck  Nemesis

Hi, will you please post on you're build of the rudder as Im either going to build this engine with piston valves or make a self starting single as per the Typhoon engine.
I have made a variable pitch prop in the past but never got on with it.The design was in Model Boats around the mid 1980s.

Jack Kitchen developed the rudder using the steam launch Bat as the test bed and she has a Sissons compound fitted with Stephenson valve gear as can the Stuart Turner 10.
One failing of the rudder on full size boats is the extra loading on the keel and transom knee not that will worry us.
kind regards

If my memory serves me right ,weren't the old liberty boats in the R N fitted with kitchen rudders ,they were very manouverable ,and with the engine going the same speed and one way ,the rudders just threw the boat exactly were was wanted .they just wound up the rudder /unwound it .great idea .

Do you have any shots of Malcolm Beak's unit installed in a boat showing the servo hock up?

Gerald.

Ball connection on top opens/closes cups and ball you can just see on LHS behind clamp is for rudder function. Cup operation linkage is a bit unclear.

Maybe a side view will show how things work rather better. In the installation shot, the steering arm is on the opposite side to the side view and the ball connection is no longer used. Note that the steering arm passes under the other working parts - in the photo it almost looks like an extension of cup arm.

Thanks Malcolm,
After a second look and another coffee it sinks in. The steering arms are connected to the bottom of the rod moved by the ball connecter moved by the servo arm.

Gerald.

In the above design, centering the 'ball' mount is necessary for symmetrical uniform closing of the rudder 'wings' while swinging the rudder post through its arc. The original idea at start of this thread which mounts the 'rudder 'wing' servo to the post in some fashion allows more freedom of design in the 'wing' closing -opening mechansim.

Exrad
In the photo of the servo on its bracket the screw secures the bracket to the post and the small hole on the right connects to a stearing servo not shown..
