Koalas
« on: November 28, 2013, 12:52:47 am »

The koala is an Australian icon, but one whose numbers are reportedly decreasing. However, we are fortunate enough to have a small number who make our farm and its surrounds their home. We frequently see them in the trees within 10 metres of our house, and they seem to spend as much time watching us as we do them. They will spend the daylight hours in a particular tree, often quite high up, and in windy weather they get a rocky ride but they obviously don't suffer from motion sickness.

We have a mother and baby visiting us at present, together with another older animal, maybe last year's joey? They seem to change trees during the night, and for that reason we make sure the dogs are locked up at that time. We can go for weeks without seeing any, then they will appear, remaining nearby for days at a time. There are a number of clumps of suitable trees on our farm, as well as neighbouring properties, so they have a corridor in which they can travel in their search for food, eucalyptus leaves.

A couple of photos taken within the last week are attached.

With us it is Possums!
Not so many on the roof now after we cleared around the house for fire protection but there is still who climbs the corner of the house near our bedroom window.  <*<

Hi,
One of the reasons for the decline is the lack of new outside breeding stock.

Mind you the traffic does not help and when a new sub division is opened the first thing to get bulldozed are the trees.

Hi Peter,
Good to hear from you.....Don't mention the cricket though.......

Beautiful animals. Great to hear they are thriving near you. It is amazing how to the rest of the world the Koala is a wonder, but to you, they are almost an everyday occurrence. We have a similar thing with the preying mantis and the chameleon.

Amazing Peter.  I cannot imagine how wonderfull it would be to see Koalas in my garden.
All we get is ruddy fat pidgeons scaring off any real birds, and messing everywhere.
Lovely photos  :-))

The mother and joey are still here, but in another tree, while the other one seems to have moved on. I'm not sure about the eating qualities of a koala, perhaps they are like scrub turkeys. The best way to cook a scrub turkey is to put it in a pot of water with a rock, and boil until the rock's soft. You then throw away the turkey and eat the rock %% {-) .

Barry, koalas are an everyday occurrence to us, but there are many Aussies who have never seen one in the wild. My Sydney grandsons saw a couple on their last visit here, and they were extremely excited, as they'd only ever seen them in a zoo.

I was going to mention the cricket but thought better of it, there are still 4 tests to go. As one commentator said, Kevin Pietersen was angry with himself for getting out in the second innings, and an angry Pietersen is a dangerous Pietersen. Australia did perform well though, and I'm hopeful the good form will continue.

I am thinking that some have got some Kangas loose in the top paddock

But back to Koalas, in some of Brisbane's leafier suburbs such Mansfield, and  Rochedale South which is actually Logan City south of Brisbane, there is a declared Koala Habitat. Koalas are often seen in backyard gum trees.

Fences are now being erected in these areas, with smooth steel panelling at the top, to prevent Koalas climbing over the fences and onto roads where they are liable to be run over.

Photo of Koala in backyard of my daughters neighbour.

Good to still be able to see them in suburbia.

Peter is indeed fortunate to have wildlife close by O0 O0 :-)) :-)) :-))
