The koala is an Australian icon, but one whose numbers are reportedly decreasing. However, we are fortunate enough to have a small number who make our farm and its surrounds their home. We frequently see them in the trees within 10 metres of our house, and they seem to spend as much time watching us as we do them. They will spend the daylight hours in a particular tree, often quite high up, and in windy weather they get a rocky ride but they obviously don't suffer from motion sickness.
We have a mother and baby visiting us at present, together with another older animal, maybe last year's joey? They seem to change trees during the night, and for that reason we make sure the dogs are locked up at that time. We can go for weeks without seeing any, then they will appear, remaining nearby for days at a time. There are a number of clumps of suitable trees on our farm, as well as neighbouring properties, so they have a corridor in which they can travel in their search for food, eucalyptus leaves.
A couple of photos taken within the last week are attached.
