Which Prop and Motor Combination?
« on: November 18, 2007, 04:45:31 pm »

I have been asked a lot recently which prop and motor should I use on my model?
In any set up there is only ONE part that drives the model.
that is the PROPELLER, nothing else
As an example a 35mm 3 Blade Rivabo prop spinning at the same speed will produce the same thrust in a Destroyer or Tug.
The same goes for any prop/motor set up.
With a given prop the only way to increase the thrust is to increase the speed within reason.
So if you have a model about the same size and are happy with the performance use this set up again unless you have the gear to check motor speed.
Or ask someone that has a similar type of model with the performance you want.
Faster craft are a bit different ie Perkassas and other Planing hulls.
But in Scale Models the above stands.

Hi Bob, totally agree. I spent ages labouring over what combo to use in my first boat. Maybe we could create a thread here with people's boat details, motor, prop, battery combos, and comments on its performance. Could be useful to put this into some sort of database as a useful lookup table for people to see what results other people had in similar boats? I'll start it off...

Boat:  Robbe Antje kit
Description: 1/20 fishing boat
Hull type (displacement/planing): Displacement
Size: 640mm length, 370mm width
Mass: 4.2kg
Battery: 6V 4Ah lead acid
Motor: Electronize 545-12
Gearbox: None
Propellor: 35mm 3 blade
Speed: Good scale speed, reasonable boost available for emergency (not excessive though!)
Run time: 2-3 hours

In the 1993 Prop Shop Catalogue there were several charts which may be of some use for matching hulls to motors to props.
I believe that Prop Shop has changed their propeller designations but the guide should still be valid.
