New boat.
« on: November 30, 2013, 04:25:58 pm »

I have just been given this boat, she is 1,20 LOA and has a removable keel, weighing 5 Kilos. The original has two masts, gaff rigged, I want to Keep it simple and rig her Bermudan, I have the original sail plan but need to calculate where the single mast should go and height of rig etc. Any thoughts out there? I have added both pics, sorry the instructions are in German, but you should beable to sort it...

@Nordsee:

I would suggest that you need to find the Centre of Effort (COE) of the original sail plan. Once you have this, draw up a Bermuda rig that will fit, calculate the centre of effort of your new rig and that should give you the mast location.

She looks nice like she is, if it were mine I would not change it. You could set up winch control on the gaff rig, should not be too hard...

The sail plan in that drawing isn't gaff rigged, it,s a Bermudian Ketch. Sorry can't help with converting to single mast thou.

Myself, I'd keep it as is and add a scale type superstructure and cockpit, good luck with the build :-))

A ketch would be a real talking point at the lakeside, as you don't see many twin masted rigs, apart from schooners.
You can still control the three sail sets (4 sails) with one servo.

A friend of mine, ( the one who built this to make the mould) has his as a Gaff rigged Ketch, she sails well but I want more simplicity and ease of rigging.
