You can use watered down  PVA  glue if your stuck.

HS93 gave me some that went on a treat and dried quickly. Then I bought some and it seemed much thicker and I didn't think it as good as Peter's ... Perhaps I should have thinned it a little?

Inwood Models in Huntingdon stock sanding sealer and Halfords do cellulose thinners. Not too far from Ely.  :-))

For a first coat I'd go 50:50 so that it will readily penetrate the wood. Further coats can go on neat as long as it brushes easily.

www.alwayshobbies.com - via the net - speedy service and a mass of materials to choose from. The last batch I got was from 'The Range' though I couldn't see it last time I was there (and don't ask the assistant, I just got a blank look).

Instead of paying three or four quid for a small can of Brand X cellulose thinners, visit your nearest car body paint supply shop (e.g. Brown Bros) and buy a 5-litre can of standard thinners. It's the same stuff for less than a tenth of the price. Handy for cleaning up and de-greasing most things except plastics - which it eats happily!

Some years ago, I was led to believe, by a very reliable source, that 'Sanding Sealer' was simply a mixture of model aircraft dope and talcum powder. However, I never found out what proportions to mix.

I also recall (30 years back!) a sanding sealer that was light grey in colour. I've never seen it since but it did an excellent job of concealing/sealing grain. Anybody remember it?

That is what I always used. Just pour some dope into a jar & add the cheapest talc you can find. I can't remember how much talc I used but it should turn a pale grey colour. If using it on Balsa I always overlaid tissue then doped through that, massive increase in strength for minimal weight increase. The SS over that.
