help needed with gluing and masking and painting
« on: December 03, 2013, 08:40:14 pm »

I'm at a loss as to how to proceed as I believe painted parts do not glue together well.  The deck will be grey and the sidewalls and buttresses will be white.  Ideally I would paint first and then attach....... but how ?

Could someone out there in clever world advise on how I could approach this.

At the moment I've only got a primer coat on the hull, my hand painting using acrylics is not as good as a spray finish.  The hull sides will have red anti-foul, a white boot top, green lower sides white upper sides and white and green super-structures and then a grey deck with many dozens of little black fittings to glue everywhere!

The photo taken from the side is mine...the other is borrowed from this site

Many thanks in anticipation everyone

Please be gentle....this is my first ever attempt at a model boat

You are correct in that it's difficult to glue painted parts together.

I personally don't paint the upper section decks or bulwarks until the little parts have been secured.  When painting the little parts you can leave the bases clean for glue time.

I'll move this to the paint section for you to get better advice

Cheers

Urrgh! I've been doing a bit of that recently (and it went horribly wrong at one point).

You just have to plan and then spend HOURS masking.
The hull is fairly straightforward, but the deck with fittings is scary (what I just did). My other boat doesn't have the fittings yet, like yours, and for that I plan on painting the deck before adding all the fittings (but gluing anything structural beforehand). Little vents and stuff don't need major 'stick', but I'll probably drill the bottom of them and the deck and use a little stiff wire to reinforce the bond when installing them.

Jon,
Someone on this site advised me to use Tamiya masking tape to mask everything. They were wise words. It sticks better than anything else, is easy to cut around detailed edges and the edges rub down well to stop paint creeping under the tape. It doesn't matter how long you leave it on and it comes off again really well.
It's more than worth the extra cost.

Many thanks Ken Chris and Plague....I had trouble with Tamiya masking tape at overlaps when I brush painted some plastic items a while back, there were fine creep lines at some of the joints, perhaps I need to press the edges down with more care and perhaps spraying will be okay anyway.  Also like the fixing method suggested

I will do everything suggested !

Many thanks

Still anxious though

That's not a bad thing really. Overconfidence would be far worse.

With reference to the  bleeding.  After you've rolled down the tape, paint over the join with the colour you are covering.  This will fill the gaps under the tape and seal the joint.  When dry, apply the new colour over the top and all should be well.

Cheers

You may want to take a look at this topic. I'm sure there are points there that could be helpful:

Yet more good stuff, the part about using ordinary masking tape and the boot top line method was so useful.  Thanks John

And again thanks to everyone above who offered advice on this build.  I've taken everything 'on board'.

This is my first attempt at an RC model... a retirement gift to myself.   Of course I'm making modifications to the kit as supplied so that probably isn't helping.  Ho hum.

I must say though.....what a great site this is !

That almost made me dig out the 'groan' icon ... but not quite.

A slippery slope that is. And one I hope I'm at the bottom of with my 'Aziz'  :embarrassed:

This is what you NEED http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3M-471-Blue-Fine-Line-Vinyl-Masking-Tape-3mm-33m-Roll-/120992255799?pt=UK_DIY_Material_Paint_Varnish_MJ&hash=item1c2bb34f37#ht_513wt_932..I use htis all hte time on cars it is the BEST money can buy and a lot cheaper than the Tamya stuff and is far SUPERIOR to anything else on the market. It is intended for professional use when painting vehicles where a 2 tone or more is needed it does NOT allow paint creep at all.....if you do get paint creep you obviously havnt run your finger along it properly to stick it down....it will NOT lift freshly applied paint.
