BBC2 Programme - "The Silent War" Tonight (Thursday) 9pm
« on: December 05, 2013, 10:58:56 am »

Hi All,

This could be interesting.
Recollections of Cold War Submariners (US, UK & USSR).
Billed as what REALLY happened on submarines during the Cold War.

Hi Guys,

Busy night on TV!

The BBC have just let me know that a piece on "Resurgam" will be on the One Show tonight at 7pm.

Sadly my contribution (and my model) never made it to the screen but it was fun meeting the whole team at the University swimming pool in Chester.

Enjoy the piece on the Reverend Garrett - quite a guy!

"The Silent War" was interesting. Good to see near official recognition of our subs hitting "icebergs"!

Sadly the piece on "Resurgam" must have been bumped off the One Show by live weather reports from the East Coast. No idea when, if ever, it will be shown.

I Don't think the BBC allow posts of their programs  <*< , they have their own section on Youtube , it may be on there sometime . . .

Good programmes , I thought.

Marius - "Talking Heads" in English (with different accents) will be difficult for you when English is not your first language!

You may find that BLA, BLA, BLA turns to only BLA if you listen for a second or third time!

True there were no huge revelations but a lot of detail was filled in. For example, I had no idea how close we were to Armaggedon during the Cuban Missile crisis. I think we were told that the Russian missiles were not operational at the time of the incident!

The programmes gave the impression of the world on the knife edge for many decades reliant on the good judgement of a handful of military men.

After watching both parts, I was amazed at what both sides achieved and how close Armageddon really was!
Like others I had read about some of the exploits but most of it was an eye opener, I knew that British submariners were mad but I didn't think that they would take something the size of HMS Swiftsure so close to the Kiev and stay there for a day. I had read about similar tactics used by HMS Conqueror during the Falklands when she was following the Belgrano but didn't know that they got that close to a Soviet aircraft carrier and got away with it!
A good programme enjoyed by me and my Dad! :-))

 :embarrassed: ...

A number of years ago  :o during a RIMPAC exercise .....one of our OZ submarines positioned itself & photographed the  carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln via the cross hairs of it's periscope....the photograph was published in the Perth daily papers

.......how did an enemy sub break in between the destroyer escorts & anti-submarine helos that were 24/7 encircling & protecting the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln
Our American colleague's were not happy  <*< .....Derek

"Finally, during RIMPAC 2000 it was reported that H.M.A.S. Waller had sunk two American nuclear submarines and gotten dangerously close to the carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln. Even more ominous, asserted researcher Maryanne Kelton, is that: “Even though the exercises were planned and the US group knew that Waller was in the designated target area, they were still unable to locate it. New Minister for Defence, Robert Hill, recorded later that the ‘Americans are finding them exceptional boats…in exercises with the Americans they astound the Americans in terms of their capability, their speed, their agility, their loitering capacity, they can do all sorts of things that the American submarines can’t do as well.’”
