Seems a crying shame to put a deck on that, and hide all that beautiful woodwork.

Perspex deck??

I see the benefits of your stout frames Danielle as they make the structure strong even when cutting holes in the sides. There is less risk of planks pinging out of place.

Tidy carpentry :-))

Thanks a lot you two. With color on the hull you can see the lovely curves much better!  ok2

Launching of the boat. Couldn't resist today ... time to get the hull into water.
With 7-8kg lead inside it floats very goodd and stable.

I will post a short video later....

Bad news .... in cold water and cold weather less than 15°C (its cold at the moment outside) the hull changes a lot .... the planks started to get longer and wider. In warm conditions the hull turns back to normal. I think in the future the paint will crack and water goes into the planks. Any ideas how I can safe the hull?

Danielle

Clearly the images of the hull in the [bath] water show that the inner surfaces are unpainted

The air temperature of 15 degrees C is the ambient, the water would have been the same temperature

If the outer RED paint was cured sufficiently would suggest that moisture had entered the wood from the inside

Natural moisture content of wood is in the order of 12%....however you now appear to have sealed the internal hull surfaces

If this is the case, you may need to sand & remove the outer hull paint and let the wood return to it's natural moisture state prior to any further painting

It may also pay dividends to apply a Z-Poxy or polyurethane type surface to fully waterproof the internals prior to any further work

Hi Danielle, i concure with Derek, also allow about a week for the wood to dry, if you can in the lounge so there is some warmth without much moisture in the air. When dried out seal the inside of the hull with Layup resin, or Zpoxy but this is expensive, this is quile thin apply between the ribs and roll the hull to coat all the internal structure, including the ribs themselves, the wood should absorb some of the resin if it is thin enough, when it has set (24 hours ish) coat the outer hull with model aircraft light weight glass cloth, again with the resin and a couple of coats to get a smooth finish, remember most paint these days is not waterproof, the resin will seal the wood and give you a smooth sanded surface to apply the finishing colour. If you need contact emails for the Glass Cloth i can send details of suppliers who do mail order.

Thanks a lot for the informations ... I will sand the hull today and then think about what I will do next. Haven't decided yet. I hate epoxy/polyethrane and any nasty smelling things because I am allergic to it....

No worries Danielle, lay up or Zpoxy dont smell too bad but you do need good ventilation, have you tried a good mask? i use a 3m mask with particle filters

I never used masks sofar .... I will give a try in sanding the hull and paint it new. The inside was painted saturday. Maybe it will be ok. If not I'll do something else.

Sanded everything to a smooth surface and gave it a new thin coat of paint afterwards... the whit patches show the problem zones ... much less as I thought.

There is a product called Eze-kote, waterbased 1-part epoxy substitute. Perhaps someone here have tried it? I haven't but would like to.
Just a thought.
