Brown Tape Alert...
« on: December 12, 2013, 09:16:49 pm »

Have done a silly trick which is obvious to all except me and a word of advice to any beginner spraying an ABS boat.Never ever use this Brown shiny parcel tape to mask off areas. How do i know??......Got most of the adhesive crud off with Cellulose Thinners and very a fine black sandpaper sponge, took three hours and much patience. So hull will be all one colour now,the tapes gone in the bin.Best stuff is Frog Tape apparently,B+Q......I know that now.Bob.

Hi Bob

Lucky the cellulose thinners didn't damage the plastic, may now be an idea to wipe with a little white spirit then soapy water to prevent it going brittle.

The best stuff I've found for removing tape residue is lighter fluid.  It shouldn't attack paint and shifts most things gummy!

Don't use duct tape for masking either.  It leaves a sticky mess at least as bad as packing tape.

Err be careful of using furniture polish a lot contain silicones which are a nightmare to get off & the paint WILL react with it.

I found masking tape the best and there are different tacks available. Don't leave it too long on the model.

I use white spirit to get any glue residue off, then wash the area with soap and water.

Tips if you use white spirit:- do not use the same part of the cloth too long, the white spirit will start to loose its effectiveness as the cloth gets glue on it.
Wear gloves if using white spirit, it can clean off oil, think what it does to your hands
If you use a piece of cloth to clean off glue, after use throw it away, the white spirit evaporates and you are left with, that's right glue, it only melts glue it does not make it disappear

This works well with jamjars etc... Fill container (boat hull) with boiling water let stand for a few seconds then peel off. It softens the bond of the adhesive and it comes away with its paper tape or label, it leaves no residue.

Don't skimp when it comes to masking tape, use a quality tape like tamiya or something like that
The cheap stuff from poundland and the like is a waste of time as well it always seems to suffer badly with bleed under.

Cheap is OK if you spray the original colour first
to bleed its own colour.
DONT leave it on any longer than you must and
it works OK.
If you don't want the hassle of stopping bleed with
a spray then spend your money on Famous.

I make sure the edge of the tape is pressed firmly against the job using my nail or a piece of soft wood.. This helps stop bleeding and I don't spray into the edge of the tape.

I really cant believe that filling an ABS hull with boiling water has been suggested? It would warp and distort the hull beyond repair.PLEASE DO NOT DO IT!!!!!!
If you have anything in the hull, such as the electronics it wont do those a lot of good either lol.
If the propshaft has been installed,it would get very hot and distort completely the area it comes into contact with.
This has been brought to my attention by another well known modeller on this site,
and I am VERY surprised no other comments have been made.
RANT OVER!
Thanks,

just gently heat with a hair dryer and any adhesive off

  without tearing

clean with white spirit

and lukewarm soapy water

must be unconscious to fill a PVC shell of boiling water

use adhesive tamya, it is more expensive but more effective

I use that citrus oil based cleaner that is supposed to be for cleaning the heatsink goo off computer chips, before replacing with the really good silver stuff, it got the sticky residue from the mock carbon fibre effect sticky stuff off the dashboard panels on my car. that or eucalyptus oil which is also good for removing sticky.
best tested on an out of sight spot before liberal use as with any solvent.

Tamiya Masking Tape is very good, a bit expensive. Tape to your line then use any masking tape to stick to the Tamiya and newspaper.

Be careful with newspaper as well as it can stain light paint with the news print
