Need Information Help
« on: December 29, 2013, 03:42:06 am »

  Hello

I need the membership`s help. For some time I have seen that there are lots of scale boat propellers available from Europe and they are metric threaded.

I have been looking at possibly buying some metric dies and threading my own prop shafts for my needs.

What is the metric range of dies that I should buy, from smallest to largest used in, for me, scale military ships, submarines?

That way I can buy the props and thread my own shafts and make my own stuffing tubes.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello

the propellers are usually threaded M4 or M5

for very small M2

But it is nice to have the M2, M3, M4, M5 are common dimensions in metric for our models

These sizing's are true........however unless you have machinery ....it is easy to create the thread ... OFF AXIS  <*< to the axis of the shaft

The result will be a propeller that spins off axis...creating an unbalanced moment  >>:-( ....Derek

Hello
yes you can thread by hand but it is very very hard to get it perfect. A local machine shop coud do in there lathe for not a lot of chash.
One option might be. Use imperial prop shafts. PropShop in the Uk will put on imperial thread on there props on request.

John,

Thank you.

Thought it would be similar to threading a pipe or bolt.

Hadn't considered any torsional or rotational loads.

Not having machinery then buying them is the way to go.

It's a shame, the whole world is going metric.

Later you may regret

  Hello GAZOU

Thank You and the others for your information for the Dies. I forgot to ask one more thing, are there Left and Right Hand Dies used for propeller shafts? If Yes then do I have to get M2 --- M5 in both Left and Right Hand?

 Thanks Again for your help.

  Hello Again

Well now I have to thank RAAArtyGunner for his information and link.

However after I read through that entire link, I MUST CONFESS, I am confused! My VERY LITTLE experience with multi prop boat drives. This is why I asked about the Need for Left and Right hand Dies; M2-M5.

I am planning on working on Several Torpedo Boats, U.S, U.K, German, Japanese, ALL to be direct drive and true to their propeller setup.

What I am NOT sure of is if I have a boat that has two LH Props and 1 RH prop, which die do I use to thread the prop shaft for it so that of course the prop does not come off or am I making it too complicated and ALL the shafts are RH Die threaded and the props are LH and RH pitch and ALL the prop shafts turn in the same direction when the boat is going forward then in opposite direction when going in reverse?????

Please help with this confusion so I don`t waste my time buying dies I do not need. Also I do own a lathe with an attachment that holds the die.

 Thanks Again

 George

  Hello Again

I just wanted to First Thank AL of you for your teaching help. The Last question I have is that I am ready to buy some Metric Dies BUT the pitch I do not know which one I should pick. ALL I want the dies for is to make threads on prop. shafts for boat propellors that come from Europe and have a Metric thread.
Here is a List of dies and their pitch values, can someone with experience here please show me from my list, which ones I should order so I can thread my own prop shafts?

 M1 x 0.25mm pitch
 M2 x 0.4mm pitch
 M3 x 0.35mm pitch
 M3 x 0.5mm pitch
 M4 x 0.5mm pitch
 M4 x 0.7mm pitch
 M4 x 0.75mm pitch
 M5 x 0.5mm pitch
 M5 x 0.8mm pitch

I have a special holder for this type of die that goes into the tail stock of my lathe, so making prop threads is not very hard, just getting the right Metric Die is.

 Thank You for Your Help

 George

So you've got just about all the thread information you might ever need George, the following may be handy :- http://www.gewinde-normen.de/en/index.html

The threads you are looking for in this application are ISO coarse
