Shapeways.com - 3D Printed Parts
« on: January 03, 2014, 03:04:44 pm »

What started as a quick project to help a friend out with some 1:96 scale fittings for his model, soon escalated into several requests from various people to draw up various other 3D pieces of equipment at various other scales and before I knew it most of 2012 had disappeared.

However, having done all this work I thought I might as well leave them on the 3D printing agencies site that I use for any other modeller who may find a use for them. I have added information about the kits and their assembly as below.

At this stage I must point out that I have no control over the production and delivery of the items, this is all down to Shapeways and if you have any problems of this nature then you will have to contact them direct.
The models and kits are made from varying materials that are most suited to the type of design and scale and can be found at :
http://www.shapeways.com/shops/3DBoats

The models are in what they term as a shop on their site as it is the only way I can group them together.

Some of the models will need various pieces of wire in order to finish them, but where possible I have made them as operational as possible and they will give any model that extra bit of detailing if required. A certain amount of small scale modelling experience will be required on the smaller kits as they can be quite delicate.
More items are already under way and will be available shortly.

Oh and one other thing, as these models and kits are 3D printed, there is no tooling involved and therefore you will get an original item each time without any loss of detail or large amounts of flashing to remove.

I to have used Shapeways and I am pleased with them. Are those models printed in Frosted ultra detail as they do look good

Hi John,

Yes the detailed kits are all best printed in Ultra Frosted detail, but the larger parts like the vents and turrets are best produced in Polished White Nylon.

For those who like something a bit more Russian in taste I have just finished modelling the Kasthan (NATO - Chesnut) CIWS.

   Hello Marmoi

I just found your posting here and I have a question about your Phalanx Gun kit, I do not remember seeing if it is available in 1/144, is it?

Also I have been planning a build of two Australian Coastal Patrol craft, Fremantle Class and Armidale Class. Would you have any plans for any fittings for either in 1/72, guns, life boats, cranes any parts?

Please let me know about ALL of the above.

 Thank You.

Hi George,

I have not done anything that small in scale yet as I do not think the current technology could produce the detail wanted at that scale yet.

I can draw up and post different equipment, I just need accurate drawings and dimensions if you have them?

Regards

George,
Allan Pew in Australia has kits for both of those including the guns. Fittings are available separately from him.

First, Thank You Marmoi for your reply and your posting.

 Second, mudway,

I am confused by your reply. As of when has Mr. Pew started selling those parts separately? The Last email I got from him he said it was not worth his time to sell anything but the FULL hull and all the fittings at ounce. Can you confirm for me that he will sell separate fittings packs and ship to me here in Canada?

 Thank You.

Al has always sold things separately but you would pay more for individual items than the lot in a set as doing one offs isn't efficient/cost efffective for him or anyone.
The freight cost might give you a shock as Australia Post now has a policy of pricing by weight blocks i.e. a parcel with a 100 gramme gun in it would cost $20 in postage as there is a flat rate up to 500 grammes now. It used to be by actual weight not bands. Aust Post call it refining prices, we call it ripping us off.
Right now he has about a 5 > 6 month order backlog, so you wouldn't get anything this side of June. My November order I'm hoping to get by March.  We are all trying to get our items before he does actually retire whcih he intended to do some time ago.
