Identification Required
« on: July 07, 2014, 07:48:49 pm »

Hi Could anybody identify the unit in the photograph. I have tried to put as much information on the photograph also if you know what it is do you know how it gets wired up and what voltage it would run on. There is no writing on it to say what it is.

It looks like an amplifier system.

Try it on 6 volts to start with. Just connect to the R/X  first and touch the jack plug with your finger. It should make a buzz on the speaker.

if it buzzes then maybe the jack plug goes into a sound output device.

cheers

hi ya

When I first looked at this, I tended to think along the same lines as Kenny - my immediate thoughts were that this looks like a very early JJC amplifier - but - the more I look at it - I am wondering is an early sound module made from one of the very first recordable chips?  Download your sound through  the JACK plug, press the little button to record the sample, adjust the volume and tone with two little pots; and the RX lead will go into a spare channel on the receiver.   This is the bit which got me thinking - why would one need an RX lead on an amplifier?  So possibly a very early do-it-yourself sound sampler.   Is there any way of locating numbers on the chip which is on the board?

Tug---Kenny
I have juat done what you advised. Powered up 6v and the speaker gave a strained noise twice. Touching the phono plug did nothing. So I assumed it was under powered and tried 12v and I think with a better speaker I will get the sound of a horn its nearly there now with the old speaker.
Bluebird
The two pots do adjust the volume and tone. If I move the stick on my transmiter left it operates also moveing it right operates it. there is a 16 pin chip that the number has been painted out and a 8 pin chip with the numbers 12F629      l/PO5E    0420 printed on.

can identify that for you. pic12f629-i/p 8 bit microcontroller. if it has a microcontroller probably is a sound sampler

hi ya there

Be careful putting 12 volts through this unit at the moment - as the pic chip has only got a line voltage of 5 volt.  Stick to 6 volts to be safe.

Hi
The 16 pin . It is painted out or is it  a sticky paper label over the chip. I use to program chips and an identifying  label was always put on the chip to give the program (software) used.   Printed on with an ink printer then a coated over with  special varnish

Just a thought

Did not want to cut the protection cover off but have done so. The.16 pin chip is painted out M101 written on very faintly.
The long componant fixed across the board which I could not read has 9 pins and the information on it is

I have a handful of JJC sound modules lurking around my workshop.
This is, in my opinion an early Mk I JJC master sound module with selectable onboard sounds and an external input.
The push button is for selecting which onboard sound is required. Sounds were selected by pressing the button withing 5 secs from power on, then it will play each sound in order and you select which you want by pressing the button again. The status light flashes to acknowledge your selection.
The status light should flash once per second when ready for use.
Power on sequence will take 5 seconds whilst it waits to see if you want the setup mode.
The two blue 'pots' are Sound Pitch Control and Volume Control.
The small jack plug connects to further JJC sound modules. The MkI master units have the jack plug and the JJC slave modules have a socket. Later MkII masters used a socket.
As stated by Bluebird the units had a 15Watt amplifier and the voltage input could range from 6 to 18 volts.
I do not remember what an M101 contained, but I've an M102 which has 'Small Ships Horns' of which there were 3 to select from.
When used with higher voltages and long durations (constant engine sounds) they were inclined to overheat and cut out.
Later model MkII master units included a large heatsink to help but I've had to modify mine to include an onboard cooling fan blowing over the heatsink. It now 'sings' on a 4S lipo.
I still have some original instructions, if you are interested.

A quick search reveals an M101 is 'Large Ships Horns'.

I have followed your instructions and got 3 horns. Have selected one which I hope improves when I get the new speaker. If you do have some origional instructions I would be interested.
Thanks to everybody for your help.
