Motor Mount Question ?????
« on: January 11, 2014, 03:52:50 pm »

Hi All,

Motor Mount Question ?????

I have a question on my Occre Ulises build ......... There is probably a simple answer, but I have no idea what it might be. The build instructions specify "white glue" (which I take to be PVA to fix the wooden motor mount base to the keel. I've been using yellow Aliphatic (Titebond) for the rest of the build so far ........... So why the white glue specifically for the motor mount ??????

I would continue with the aliphatic - I don't think PVA has any special properties over the aliphatic - rather the reverse as I understand.

Hi Peter, is the aliphatic titebond the weather proof type (waterproof)
or the indoor only type used for general purpose ?
Not all the "white PVA glue" are waterproof so if you have water ingress
inside the boat the mounting could come unstuck.
Just a thought.

Hi Peter what materials are you trying to glue together?  Are you gluing wood to wood  - or wood to some type of plastic or fibreglass?

Stick with the aliphatic and would advise sealing with a water based varnish

Thanks for your replies........... The motor mount base is ply, and sits on the keel and a cut out in the former....... So wood to wood. I'm using Titebond III which I believe is the waterproof one......... So I'll stick with the Alphatic. I've epoxied the four screws into the ount so I have four studs to bolt the alloy mount to.......... The mount is in and the motor aligns nicely with the propshaft .........

Just started on the hull planking  :-))

Now I'll probably be excommunicated or something .......... I have some Cuprinol coloured varnish (Jade Green) that I used on the picnic table in the garden....... It's water based and water repellent. Is there any reason I can't use that ?????

Is it Varnish or stain? varnish is o/k but a stain could bleed through and effect exterior
paint finishes. I use yacht varnish from screwfix cheap and does the job.

Definately a varnish john..........

I had another thought today about the inside of the hull ......... At work we have some "urethane based" clear coating we used for a contract on a ship ........... It is an amber clear, dries hard as iron once it is on it is on .. Totally water resistant but is still flexible and copes well with materials that expand and contract with changes of moisture and humidity ......... and it is spec'd for wood............ So my question???? ............ Would a urethane based coating react in any way with the aliphatic glue I'm using ............??????

Hi, No it would not react, but will find that PVA does not stick properly to urethane. nemesis
