Drawings:- Swann Hunter and Denny of Dunbarton
« on: January 13, 2014, 05:51:56 pm »

Hi,

Does anyone know if there are drawings available for ships built at the above two yards?

The Swann Hunter ship was built in 1902 and the Denny ship in 1947?

Any help appreciated.

I believe the Denny collection is still held by the National Maritime Museum. I have three of the four volumes of the 'Denny List' by David Lyon and if you tell me which ship you are interested in I can post the details.

Hello Colin,

Thanks in advance.

It is the unfortunate and tragic MV Princess Victoria.

And the Swann Hunter ship is also the Princess Victoria, but the CPR one.

Sandy,

The Denny List records that the National Maritime museum has the following:

Princess Victoria 1946.

Lines/Rig as earlier vessel/ lower & main deck/promenade and boat deck/midsection etc.

Photos: Trials (5); Interiors (5); Engine Room (5); details (5); In dry dock (2)

The collection also has the plans of the earlier Princess Victoria built in 1939 to a similar design and mined in 1940. The later vessel appears to have been very much a repeat.

Other info on the Princess Victoria  that members my find of interest can be seen here:

Another source for Clyde built ships is the MItchell library in Glasgow - I got some excellent builders  plans of HMS Blake about a year ago
and they were about half the price of the NMM.  I also found the staff at the \Mitchell extremely helpful.

The University of Glasgow holds some Denny archives as well as those of many other Scottish shipyards.

Thanks to everyone for replying.

I have had drawings from the Mitchell before and they are reasonably priced. I just can't remember them doing Denny's. Fairfields, yes, but Denny's, maybe.

I will pop in and check.

Anyone know about Swann Hunter drawings?

I`m almost certain the Denny archives are with either the NMM or the SS Great Britain trust Sandy.

I do know Denny drawings are generally VERY hard to come by {:-{ I`ll pop into the Denny test tank tomorrow and try and find out for you :-))

As per my previous post, the Denny drawing collection went to the National Maritime Museum in 1963 and was published by their Trustees in 1976 as compiled by David Lyon.

As far as I am aware they are still available.

You may also have luck at this link....

http://www.skipper.co.uk/catalogue

It is Brown Son and Ferguson. I have bought plans from them in the past- unfortunately there is no search facility (at least that I can find) I had to work through the plans list until I found the name of the ship I was looking for.

Sorry Colin, most, but not all the Denny drawings are with the NMM, there are a fair number of ships drawing from 1849-1957 residing at the Glasgow university archives, also a good number are in the Central Navy Museum in St Petersburg , Russia.
I found it very difficult to obtain drawings for a ship some time ago, but eventually traced them to St Petersburg :-))
Don`t ask me how they got there  %%

http://www.gla.ac.uk/services/archives/    is the link and I note they hold Denny plans from 1849 - 1957. Whether your ship is among them would be worth inquiring.
