Painting "Bloom"
« on: February 20, 2014, 09:22:16 pm »

I sprayed some plastic with Halfords spray paint yesterday.  When I went back to it today it had all Bloomed over and looked misty and had no shine at all.

I am assuming this was caused by the inclement weather and temperature overnight, so my question now is,  'Can it be resprayed'  or does it all have to be removed.

i appreciate the weather has to improve or the work be moved to warmer premises but I wondered if another coat of paint would restore it to normal.

Help please gents, as it's a lot of work to get it back to bare plastic.    {:-{

Ken, I would say that the bloom was almost certainly caused by high humidity, but maybe Stavros can help you regarding the "treatment". You may have to wait until the weather improves.

Uncle Stav to the rescue AGAIN Uncle Ken ..................Right where do I start..........Yes it was caused by the inclement weather we are having.

Rub it with 800 wet dry and spray again making SURE that you do it on a warmer day,one trick you could use is to spray it then put it into the airing cupboard before Mrs Ken finds out.

Another way is to GENTLY warm the plastic either in front of a electric fire or heat gun and then apply the paint.....heat again with a heat gun to get the paint to dry quickly....apply more paint ...............NOW I fully realise ths is NOT the preferred way of painting but you can get away with it.

Well done Uncle Stav, :-))  I knew you'd be able to help O0  I'll keep that advice in mind for future reference too, although most houses in Australia don't have airing cupboards... we don't need them.

Thank you both for the advice.   :-))

The piece in question is a  'Revell  tree'   full of components and the idea of scraping it all off is almost impossible

I'll try re painting when it's warmer.

You've hit the nail right on the head.

My  "painting instructions"  are............  " go to the bottom of the garden, away from the house,  and mind the plants".

Life of terror.

you're allowed to do it in the garden?, I have to go to the alley from the back gate to the road... and then only when the wind is blowing away from the house.

I think Ken will just have to bite the bullet and go out and BUY one of those cheap Plastic greenhouses and use one for paint spraying...Then he could spray on a cold day as it would be warmer in there....He wouldnt reap the WRATH of his good lady....As for Colin suggesting the toilet .............Well goodness Gracious Me heavens above,Colin it appears funny things go on in your Toilet and we DONT EVEN want to know  O0 O0 {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

Cheers Dave,

Luckily there will be no painting needed for a while. I'll wait for the warmer weather.  I did use my workshop for spraying once and the fumes and smell were awful even with both doors open and a wind blowing through. We do have a shed in the garden but I never thought of that.   :-))

Cheers

If the toilet extractor fan sparks, you are in for an even more interesting experience and an awkward interview with SWMBO. Go on, I dare you!
