virus warning
« on: January 18, 2014, 08:52:01 pm »

Hi all just to warn you about recent virus problem on my pc .
while I was working on my course work for my webmaster diploma (see website offer  on this forum) my pc suddenly shut down , after restarting my pc my security notified me that it had shut down my pc for security.
So did a full sweep of my pc to find the cause , while I waited for this to complete I noticed the file for my course work was missing in fact the entire file had been wiped off my pc over 2,500 files gone .so like most I opened the windows recovery to restore the files only to find that had also been wiped clean .
thankfully I also have a network drive that backups with every key press or everything would have been lost .
The security sweep found the source of the virus it had come in with the last java update and stayed dormant till now .
so I would advise you all to check your pc before this happens to you.

Are you saying that an official Java update contained a virus? If so have you informed Oracle? I am sure they would want to know. I normally accept all java updates - mmm!

The virus has infected the java update, it didn't come from java like that.

What antivirus are you using?

I am but a novice, but, do a Google search and you will be surprised.

Site hacking and warning not to use/activate Java script until they clean it up, same as the current warning to virus screen all adobe updates, they all might look legitimate but ...................

With things like this and the more worrying ransomware from Cryptolockers, I've now gone to backing up all my data and photos to an external hard drive that is kept unplugged from the PC until a backup is done, then unplugged again afterwards. That way, any nasties that go around deleting or encrypting files simply can't see it!

Considering pretty well all computers use Java and Java Script I would say there is very little on the web about any Virus alert.. And I would have thought all hell would have let loose by now..

Not saying there is not a problem , but !.

From what I have read, There is a fake Java Update pop up and that is where problems may be stemming from.

I had  a warning page pop up and lock my browser-the warning was from interpol saying if I didn't pay them a fine my computer would remain locked, this is the same sort of thing emanating from cryptlockers.

It relies on javascript to actually invade your computer, this could have been inserted into a reputable site. In my case this was a ticket booking website, generally they themselves have been hijacked without knowing it. Once the javascript is activated on your system it then spreads, all I have done is turn off javascript for browsing purposes. If I go to a site that I trust then I turn the javascript back on, but it is turned off for safety's sake nowadays.

If an update notification pops up in the middle of a session, dump it, its likely a fake dressed up to look like Adobe Flash Player or Java Script.  Rogue updates of both these are the top way in to a PC for the bad guys.  If in doubt, search for the appropriate real company and download from there and make a mental note to avoid the offending site if possible.
There has been a bit of talk in the techie press lately about the poor security on the newer household appliances that connect to the internet.  It seems that if you have been daft enough to buy a fridge that has an internet connection (!!??) it, or its address, can be used to send spam email.   This also applies to smart TVs.

I also followed my Gurus advice and turned off javascript as you have done.
Working fine that way.

Ref the fridge issue.

The problem is most likely with Bluetooth.
If you have your computer/phone/etc. open for Bluetooth then the whole world can see your devices. There is a security code but it is easily hacked. Once on your devices people can play.
