A case of not knowing when to accept a vehicle is beyond restoration.

Derek,
They are stromberg carbs, same principal but with a diaphragm instead of piston.
In my youth I owned 7 of this type (yes at the same time) Minx, Superminx, Gazelle and Sceptre.

Hullo Bob.......looks like the Rootes Group may have been performing the proverbial with export vehicles.......

Courtesy of Wiki........
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
"The Rapier's 1390 cc engine was essentially the same as that fitted to the Hillman Minx but with a raised compression ratio (8:1 instead of 7:1), a Zenith DIF 36 carburettor and revised inlet and exhaust manifolds. In this form it developed 62.5 bhp (46.6 kW) at 5000 rpm. A column change, four speed transmission with overdrive on third and top was included in the price as a standard feature.[1]

Although the Rapier's performance was lively by the standards of its time, and its handling was considered[by whom?] to be excellent, it soon became clear[vague] that it wasn't powerful enough.[clarification needed] From October 1956, directly as a result of experience gained in international rallying by Rootes' competition department, the Rapier was fitted with the updated R67 engine on which the Stromberg carburettor was replaced by twin Zenith 36 WIP carburettors on a new inlet manifold. This engine produced 67.5 bhp (50.3 kW) at 5000 rpm,

I have never owned a vehicle fitted with SU carbs.........but an older cousin here in OZ owned a Sunbeam Rapier ...& my memory bank tells me it was fitted with twin SU's.......

He was always complaining  >>:-( about the difficulty in the synchronization......but this is 50 years ago  O0.........they could have been an aftermarket installation ...........Derek

The SU carbs were a simple engine tune as they were far more developed on the BL engines eg the racing minis.
Easy to get more performance by filling damper with sewing machine oil, far thinner.
I fitted a weber 27/36 to mine and the performance was noticeable.
The Rapier had the same engine as the Sceptre but it depends if you had a 1600 or 1725cc.
The Rapier was seen as the sportier of the range but the Alpine 2 seater was seen as the sportiest.
Rapiers were entered in the Monte Carlo Rally and did reasonably well.
Never heard of a 1390 cc engine.

My first car was a 1954 Sunbeam Talbot 2270cc.
A convertible, bought for me by my father for £50 around 1964.
It had (some) rust in places then!

I had a Hillman Minx, dark grey and pale blue, it was a lovely thing... until the engine expired.

It ended up with a Holbay Rapier and gearbox in it, 5 1/2J Cortina wheels, lowered all round, gutted inside and fitted with a roll cage. We put a big bug scoop on the bonnet, and finally it was sprayed black with a gold pin stripe.

It made several trips across to Eire, and never let me down in all the time I had it. I sold it after a couple of years and bought a Brabham Viva.

I guess it was my first attempt at a street rod.

***** Years ago trying to run a car on poor apprentice pay
the local scrap yard was my second home, sourcing car parts
flared wheel arches chrome mudguards pool ball gear knob
 GT dashboards etc.etc.
 I think that,s why I like sratch building boats now {-) {-)
those were the days, you could work on cars then.
Nowadays you need a computer to plug in with
a diagnostic program for your particular car.
then special tool this and that to get to the problem.

My first car was a 1954 Sunbeam Talbot 2270cc.

N

2267cc to be precise! Beautiful car, won the Monte Carlo Rally. All leather upholstery - mine was 1954 Sunbeam Talbot 90 Saloon in Rootes Crystal Green. Petrol station attendants would say "could you please turn your engine off, sir, you are draining our pumps!!" I tried to pull a wheelie in mine and stripped all the teeth off the diff - great days....

Stav,
Just a bit too old even for me to have owned or worked on.
My favourite was the Humber Sceptre.
Had up to 7 of the class outside my house at one time.
I used to regularly rebuild my dad's Hillman Minx over the weekend ready for him to drive to work.
