I want to be able to take measurements from the picture.
I know that it is 35' long
I thought there may be some way of putting it into Photoshop then adjusting the size to 35:whatever

??

Hi banjo,

The way I would do it, would be to a photo copy shop.
If you work out as a percentage how much bigger you want the picture to become, just up size it by that percentage.

For example, if your boat picture is six inches long, but 1/12 scale would be twelve inches long then up size it two hundred percent.
One hundred percent is the actual size of the original being copied.

If you have a scanner then you can also do it that way. There probably is a correct way of doing it, but we just drag the picture to the size we require.

Try cropping the pic to length of boat and enlarge it to 35cm long. All measurments from picture should then be equal to 1cm : 1ft. Therefore for 1/12 scale all measurements in cm become inches.

PS enlarged pic but it was too big to send. :(

I get this kind of thing done all the time, but in the copy shop I use, to enlarge from six inches to twelve inches, you'd have to ask them to enlarge by 100%, which is what they'd dial into the copier, 200% would take it to 18" with the example given. Some copy shops are more helpful than others, but to make it easier for them, it's always best to draw two neat crosses on your plan a set distance apart, something like 500mm for example, and tell them you want the enlarged plan to measure exactly 750mm, 1000mm, or whatever you want between these points. That's much easier for them than being asked to enlarge a plan to some figure like 856mm from bow to stern, and believe me they'll curse you if you ask for that, so do all the sums yourself beforehand, they'll be more co-operative that way.

Divide the measurment(length) you want, by the the measurment you have(length) and get your enlargment ratio.

so if you want to have a 647.7mm boat, or plan dimension, divide that by the picture dimension 152.4 mm

647.7 ÷ 152.4mm = 4.25 therefore, make your copy at 425%

rule of thumb,
to enlarge, divide the large number by the small number

to reduce divde the small number by the large number.

1/32 reduced to 1/72nd scale
32 ÷ 72 = 0.44 therefore make copies at 44%

1/32 enlarged to 1/12
32 ÷ 12 =2.66 therefore make copies at 266%

The percentages can also be plugged into Photoshop  or Coreldraw to manipulate the image.

Just beware that sometimes you can get slight distortion in the re-print and the horizontal expansion can be slightly different from the vertical.

Tony is right. Photocopiers are not accurate enough to automatically enlarge or reduce to scale. Far better to do as Kayem suggests and set a datum, the enlarged size of which you know.

Personally, I use a drawing package and do the job myself. I import the original into the drawing package (I use Micrografix Designer), then draw a couple of verticals a predetermined distance apart - say the beam I need, or the new distance between perpendiculars. I then scale up the imported original until it fits the verticals. You now have a drawing to the new scale. Designer has a layers facility, so you can trace various bits (frames, keel etc) on different layers and turn them on or off for printing. The down side is that with a big model you have to stick a lot of A4 sheets together to get a useable plan!

Have a look at the application on the Edinburgh MBC website for doing just this!  ;D

You can 'dial in' what you have, tell it what you want and it will tell you how much to increase/decrease to suit a particular scale for use in PhotoShop etc. You can also see what sizes suit you in various scales.
