F14 Tx expansion
« on: February 06, 2014, 01:26:10 am »

I have a Futaba F14 Navy, 40megs. Tx
There are lots of spaces to expand it from a 4 channel, but I have no idea what I need to buy to add on to this I would like to make it into at least an 8 channel Transmitter.
Could anyone help please?

The least expensive way to achieve 8 channel expansion of an F14 is to use two slider 'switch' units in the spaces between the mani sticks, and two 3-position switches in the expansion areas at the top left or right of the TX face.
These then simply plug into the spare connectors for channels 6 - 8 on the Tx pcb.

Details can be found at Westbourne Models website.

http://www.westbourne-model.co.uk/acatalog/Robbe_F_Series_Radios.html

Anything beyond this requires purchasing encoders and decoders for the Tx and Rx, together with the specific multiswitch or multiprop modules appropriate to your requirements. This being a more expensive option

Again all available parts are listed on Westbourne Models website.

I hope this helps.

I own an FC 16, which has the same expansion options as the F14. You certainly don't need to purchase expansion boards to expand your set. Depending on the type of functions you want e.g. switched or proportional, you can use pots  for propotional control (generally a 1k pot with two 2k resistors soldered either side is sufficient) or two or three way switches for on/off functions. Robbe charge a bomb for these items, so its worth sourcing the items from electronics stores and wiring them in yourself.

Yep, sliders and rotary knobs are most useful as they give you proportional channels.

Whether these are worth buying depends on if you need all those auxiliary functions. With current technology it isn't hard to expand a common 8-channel set to say 256 channels or beyond, but then who needs that?

If you know where to pick up the PPM pulse and power connections, then yes it's fairly easy to convert these.

I have read somewhere that the multiplexing switch modules don't always work with 2.4ghz though. Can't back that up with any hard data, as I don't use those modules on my FC16.

I came across some conversion stuff years ago but lost it. it didn't really explain what needed to be done. I certainly dont have the expertise to tackle it.

The simple answer is, if you're unsure, then don't.

Do bear in mind that the board layout is very different on the F14 to the FC16, so treat that as only a very basic guide of what is involved.

Sorry guys this is getting all too technical for me! All I wanted to know was which parts I would require, and where would they go?
If I put 6 switches in,the 6 pairs of wires would go where and connect to what? what else would I need at the receiver end? I have a 6 channel receiver, and I would then have a 6channel radio with 6 extra switches,so would I have to have 2 receivers? I really dont know, and could do with a simple diagram please?
Thanks,

The set has a maximum of eight channels. Four of those are taken up with the proportional stick controls. That leaves you with four more functions, which can be switches if that is what you want. If you need more functions than this, then you need the auxilliary boards which were mentioned earlier, but they do add a lot of expense, so make sure that is what you want.
