Fast Patrol Launch
« on: February 07, 2014, 08:36:21 am »

Here I am studying the plans and liberating bits of ply wood from the laser cut sheets, have stuck the keel bits in place, next bit as soon as I get a better craft knife, the one I bought broke up after about an hours use. Guess I will find the best place to get tools from eventually.

The kit is from the Vintage Model Boat Company, as suggested by Martin

The bits..........

Hope the photy's are OK

The VMBC kits are pretty good.  You may need to watch the drawing a little.  I built their 25" Wavemaster last year and I'm very happy with the result but the drawing that came with that kit was slightly out in places.  The drawing for the Wavemaster was a copy of the original kit plan from 1960s-70s and the kit parts were slightly different.  That said the parts are substantial and if the Patrol boat is as good as the Wavemaster I'm sure you'll be delighted with the result
Build to the marks on the timber and use the drawing as a guide. Do plenty of test fitting before you glue anything. You want to make sure the hull frames are good and solid before skinning as pulling the hull skins around can put an awful lot of strain on them.
Check out my build of the Vintage Model Boat Company, Wavemaster 25.

You are absolutely right with the drawings being out, I have had to modify several bits, also the instructions are definitely not good enough for the total novice as I am to model boats, but I am from technical hands on background and have recovered a few problems quite easily.
The frame and removable top sections are to be strengthened here and there, I already had that in mind, but keep on with the tips please

I have ave had to shorten the keel by the thickness of the Transom board to make it fit nicely.

And have glued some blocks on for the Breast Hook to pull down to so as to make life easy.

The rubber band trick is a good method of holding bits together and a tip for supply of these is "be nice to your Postman/lady :-)

It might be worth making note of any required changes for the manufacturer, they always
find them useful and you never know what 'reward' they may offer in thanks!

( Keep correction notes factual, VERY simple and no opinions! )

Hi Martin,

I have just spoken to the manufacturer to order the running gear (motor, servo, rudder etc.) and mentioned a few discrepancies, I made the comment about things not being explained in the instructions for the novice. His return comment was that they are not aimed at the novice and most folk put there own touches to these kits. I can go with what he says as I have already made minor changes to mine.

I have learned a lot so far in the corrections that I have had to do because of my lack of knowledge on the model boat subject.

This is where I am now.

A great 'get out of jail' card that!

It's true up to a point as there will inevitably be some changes between the original kit drawing and the modern laser cut kit although I am not totally convinced.

There are one or two other suppliers out there who tend to reject suggestions that maybe some improvements can be made...

Hi Dave,
In their defence I have just looked at the ply for the skin and it does look good quality and quite flexible. You have convinced me though, it was in mind anyway, to seal and paint the complete inside of the boat, I will do some of this before the side skins are fitted to insure that all areas are covered.

My original plan that I bought 20 years ago, as mentioned in my "Beginners start here...!" thread was "M.F.V. EILEEN" and I have already traced the keel and sheer board, I'll start another thread, soon................ :-))

And a bit more progress :-))

The rear deck, I put on a tab to tuck under at the back to help it stay in position and the extra bits around the under side will with a bit of luck stop it twisting or warping. Not sure if it would distort but water can have these sort of effects on ply wood and I'm not giving it the chance.

Made the cabin roof  :-)

Again put extra into the outer edge.  :-))

Now for the Cockpit, started putting this together . I wanted to make sure it fitted from the start, so I have built it in situ, hopefully to stop the glue grabbing where it's not needed I have put some brown tape in those areas.  :-))

Bless those elastic bands.

More progress :-))

The cockpit was easily removed thanks to the brown tape  :-)

Pegs come in very useful for the stringers, is that what are are called ?

Rear deck fits a treat on the little ledges that I put in  :-))

This is how she looked this morning  :-)

Stuck the ends of the 2nd Gunwale stringers, I'll pull them round later today  :-))

That's it for now................

I have just finished making this model from the original aerokits kit.
Yours is looking very nicely built , Only trouble I really had was in fitting the windscreen
at that angle to meet up with the deck at the bow.

I do like that small saw you are using  - I need to get one now!

Hello Paul,

I'm struggling to resize a photo of my Patrol boat to show you the slight difference in shape
of the cabin and deck. Can you see the 2 pieces of wood around the opening where cabin sits -
this will cover any alignment issues.
By the way I planked the deck here with teak strips.
Razor saw - that's it - thank you.

Hi Nordlys,
Yes I get it, they form a "V" at the back of the breast hook, is that correct ?

Certainly looks nice with the Teak deck, did you buy the teak in strips or cut it yourself ?

Hi Paul,
Sorry, they are mahogany strips! Bought from Cornwall Model Boats.
Yes a vee shape, matching the cabin. But your deck is straight isn't it?
I did do a bit of adjusting of the cabin front to fit. Plus the 2 strips.

The breast hook is straight, but the cockpit/cabin front is "V" shaped pointing forward, I get your drift, we have to adapt  :-))
