My Eileen
« on: February 08, 2014, 06:14:00 pm »

This is the reason I started messin' with model boats is that 20 odd years ago I bought a plan of "M.F.V. EILEEN" and have started it at least once if not twice but never got really off the ground so to speak.

Whilst waiting for the glue to dry on the "Fast Motor Launch" I got fed up with waiting, so I thought Ah! I need something to occupy myself, I went to the shed and got a piece of board and clamped the plan of My Eileen to it, then taped on the greaseproof paper and traced the Keel and a couple of other bits.

Sorry about the poor quality photy, but the lights going and I really need to sought it out...........

I'll be keeping an eye on this build as well Paul :-)

Not sure but I think I've got the same plan stored away somewhere - I must take some time out to unearth all my unused plans and get building %)

Ray.

Let us hope the ply and other timber laying around here is good enough, I love re-cycling

If you're versed in Silver Soldering, you could feather the inside edges and glue it back together, otherwise, any of the woodworkers band saw blade suppliers. These are better quality than Machine mart etc.. It looks like a Burgess BK2 or 3.

The supplier will want to know the exact length, the width and the TPI. I've bought new blades from several suppliers on the web and not been disappointed. I had the twin brother of the saw in the picture until some kind soul broke into my shed and nicked it. The replacement was nothing like as good.

I have heard others say they are good to, this cost me £5 at a car boot sale and the blade was in it, so can't complain. Yes I measured it at 56 1/2 inches and have ordered 4 new blades at £6 63p each, 2X10 TPI and 2X14 TPI, (it was a 10TPI blade in it). I bought them from Toolstation , it was free delivery if your order is over £10, so I had a job to resist :-)

I wonder if it was the same one which was nicked from my shed in Nottingham, a scant 25 miles hence? We may never know! I use Toolstation as well - good supplier, but they will bombard you with E-mails afterwards.

Any distinguishing marks or anything recognisably specific about yours ? the bloke did say he had up graded to a more commercial model. When was yours nicked ?

Due to the frame being an alloy casting if you try to do "Heavy" cuts it tends to flex. The blades supplied initially by Burgess were very thin and proved to be a problem using standard blade welding equipment even on the lowest settings so making a holding jig (from bits of angle iron) to silver solder may help on a Sunday afternoon. Just let the machine cut and don't force it.

Just musing really - it was umpteen years ago and there's no way I would recognise it now. I remember buying it for forty quid (practically brand new) from a guy who was well known for buying stuff; changing his mind and bringing it back for a refund, and then wanting to buy it back again. We must have sold him the same set of Futaba 6M radio at least three times!

Yep. Down to me last five hundred grand and the ash-tray in the Roller's full again. That'll mean a trade-in come next month (when the pension's paid in). Ain't life a bummer sometimes?

Back on Eileen again  :-)) got some new blades for the band saw from "Toolstation" for £6.63 each  :-))

I have now cut out two keel sections and two sheer board sections, what I am going to do or should I say done is glue two keel sections together as the plan says use quarter inch section and I only have thinner ply and two together make it 3/8ths, my thoughts are this will be stronger, anyone have any thoughts on this.

Progress :-)) Oh! and before anyone says anything, the cupboard door is a spare...............

planning on tracing and cutting out the bulkhead sections...........

Well I cut the bulkheads out an age ago, thought it about time to resume my efforts.

Spent a bit of time today cleaning up the rough cut bits and bobs of keel and bulkheads ready for assembly but first I have to dissect the keel for the stern tube fitting and make up some keel doublers.

More soon and some photy's

Prop tube fitted and Keel doublers in place with the sticky stuff

Truing up the sheer boards.

keel doublers fitted.

No.1 and No.7 bulkheads in place.

No.6 bulkhead in place, sheer boards just resting on top.

Next step I think is to fix in position No.1 and No.7 bulkheads with the sheer boards slotted in but not glued, unless others feel differently.
