Diamond dust coated cutting discs
« on: February 16, 2014, 05:18:33 am »

Guys.........

Some 12 months back, I needed to accurately cut a piece of 5.0 mm diameter boiler glass gauge tube.......
Successive attempts ....despite learned readings resulted in many breakages  & lots of expletives  >>:-(

So I purchased a brand name 20 diameter diamond dust coated cutting disk ....& it performed brilliantly in cutting the glass & has continued the cutting of K&S brass tubing
The propriety branded disk was $23.80 + $6.00 postage within Australia
= $29.80 per individual disk

Today I have just placed an e-bay order for a parcel of ten x pieces of the near identical 20/22 diameter diamond dust coated cutting disks for $9.26 including free postage to OZ
= $0.926 per individual disk..........

I think the ten diamond dust coated discs will probably exceed me {-)........... .......Derek

The cheapies may look similar but are they of similar quality? They might be more likely to break up but it can't hurt to try at that price.

File, spit, crack and don't forget to fuse the ends. Trust you're cutting under water?  Glass dust is not conducive to good health.

Yes Ian.......post cutting with drips of water........then a very light sanding on the 20 diameter face of the disc........the 5 diameter outer & inner circumferences were RAZOR sharp

Gas heated the ends to cherry red & hey presto it fluidized the end faces totally eliminating the sharpness......Derek

Guys....the ten pack of discs .....[+ four arbours] arrived this morning.....& have completed ten trial cuts in 5/32" brass tube with one disc

1. the arbour runs absolutely true
2. the test diamond disc runs concentrically without any vibration
3. the cutting rate is approx. 2/3's that of the original singular German disc
4. scratching the diamond grit with a finger nail confirms the Chinese discs have a finer diamond sizing grade dust
5. one cut with the Chinese disc took say 25 seconds including water dripping....no apparent loss of cutting ability after the 10th cut
6. one cut with the original German disc took say 15 seconds including water dripping

Chinese disc =$0.92 each
German disc = $29.00 each..........

As I suggested before .......I think the ten diamond dust coated discs will probably exceed me {-)........... .......Derek
