Late CMB 55
« on: February 20, 2014, 12:44:36 pm »

I just took possession of one of Christian Sheppard-Capurro's excellent hulls that I had commissioned, a 1/24 scale late CMB 55 that I intend to build as MTB 27, originally a Chinese boat that served the Royal Navy with distinction in Hong Kong fighting the Japanese.

Since the plans and reference info I have lack a lot of detail when it comes to the twin drives and rudder, I wanted to ask if any you kind folks here may have clear drawings, photos or specs with which to base my build upon.

Thanks for the reply but I have these as well other references in my file including the John Lambert late plan which the hull was based upon. I understand from a post I have on the CMB thread on the Ship Model Forum that the Imperial War Museum has a large scale model on display which offers more to go with, at least when it comes to another reference photo.

I have a couple photos of the IWM model I took on a trip to the UK in 2004. I'll attach them below. I also have a couple of pictures of a smaller version of the CMB also at Duxford that I will attach in the hopes that they might be useful as an example of the propulsion technology of the times.

Hope they help,

Hi Herrmil

Thanks for the praise, careful the IWM pictures show the WWI version.

I think the most useful link is the one below which is the beginning of the build which Longshanks linked you to;

It shows all the running gear, it all looks very good to me!

Thanks again for all the info, gents. I do appreciate the replies.

Christian, you'll be pleased to hear your hull survived even the rigors of China Customs who were interested in seeing it up close after I arrived Shanghai the other night.

I came across an excellent model of the CMB 55 1917 version in the Royal Museum Greenwich collection that show far more detail than I've seen before.

The rudders & drive from the following photo match the late plans so I'm going with what I've got.  :-))
