Hi Gentlemen,

Can anyone please help? I am posting this query on behalf of an elderly gentleman who is not equipped with the interweb.

This chap is building a model of scharnhorst, I don't know the scale but he tells me it is some six feet long, and he is having a problem getting some idea of what the ships horn would have sounded like.
I know this is a strange one but I am sure someone out there would be able to help.

It is his intention to put a JJC sound system into the boat so if anyone can give any guidance I would be very grateful and can pass something on.

Cheers
Tom
P.S. Bloody loud is not quite what I was hoping for......

P.P.S. just to complicate matters I live in Southport and I understand this gentleman is in the Slough(ish) area.

Come on please guys.

I am grateful that so many of you have had a look at this topic, I would be even more gratefullerrer for any sort of useful input.
For example: This gentleman served in the Royal Navy during the last world war but in escort vessels,
he knows what a destroyers' horn would sound like ( sort of vvwoop vvwoop) did Kriegsmarine capital ships have a distinctive tone?
Every little helps

If your friend was around then in destroyers he has probably come a hell of a lot closer than most of us have!!!

I would be very surprised if it was anything other than a single continuous tone as was just about every other large vessel of the time.

Probably steam driven as she was a turbine driven vessel.

.... Kapitain Wolf says.....

Hi, Martin, as far as i know, German capitalships have not got a special sound from the siren, its a deep very loud sound like all steamdriven ships in that period had, the bigger the whistle the louder the sound, even destroyer in the German navy only had normal whistle sound close the enemy is listening all the time. Hope it helps. Will research that with some old German Kriegsmarine lads if the still remember but i think i am spot on there. Wolfie

Thank you gentlemen.

Thinking back on my original posting I now think that BLOODY LOUD is, after all a perfect description!

Thank you again

Follow this link to Youtube, about 2/3 of the way into the 2 1/2 min video, you hear two distinctive alram sirens on this German Kapital ship.

:)I can't help at all regarding the sound of the ships horn but I did ask my father. He was in one of the (very old) destroyers that attacked the Scharnhorst and Gneisenhau during the channel dash. He said that he never did hear the Scharnhorst's horn but he can give a very vivid impression of the sound of broadsides from her 11 inch guns at a distance of 4 miles.
